2009 Season - Thiel beats Vikings 17-3 in baseball
WINTER HAVEN, Florida – Thiel battered four Augustana pitchers for 23 hits and the Vikings lost for the first time in the 2009 season by a score of 17-3 at Chain of Lakes Park in Winter Haven, Florida. Matt Erickson (Marmion Academy, Channahon, Ill.) started for Augustana and lasted four innings, giving up eight runs on nine hits. None of the three hurlers who came after him fared much better.
The game was scoreless through two innings and Thiel put one run up in the third and two in the fourth. In the fifth the winners scored five runs to break things wide open. After a two run sixth Thiel countered with five in the seventh and two in the eighth.
Augustana did not score until notching a single run in the sixth and two in the ninth.
Don Hansen (Cary Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) had two hits to lead the Augustana offensive attack.
The Vikings are now 6-1 on the season while Thiel, which is currently ranked 22nd in NCAA Division III, moved to 5-1.
