2009 Season - Softball team beats Gwynedd-Mercy 7-1 to move 5-1
KISSIMMEE, Florida – A combination of strong pitching and an offensive explosion were the keys as Augustana defeated Gwynedd-Mercy 7-1 in non-conference softball on March 4 in Kissimmee, Florida. Sheldon Ritzheimer (Wesclin HS, Trenton, Ill.) tossed five innings and got relief help from Erica Aten (Moline HS, Coal Valley, Ill.). On the offensive side the Vikings smacked 14 hits and benefitted from five Gwynedd-Mercy errors.
Ritzheimer only allowed two hits while striking out nine and walking just two. She evened her record at 1-1. Aten came in and worked the final two innings, striking out three and giving up just one hit.
In the top of the third inning the Vikings scored two runs to take the lead. With two outs, Melissa Nelson (West Aurora HS, Aurora, Ill.) singled and Brittany Snoreck (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) doubled her in with the game’s first run. Snoreck eventually scored on an infield single by Jackie Gill (Heyworth HS, Heyworth, Ill.).
After a single run in the top of the fifth, Augustana broke loose with four runs in the sixth with Stephanie Sarb’s (Lisle Township HS, Lisle, Ill.) three run double with two outs serving as the big blow.
Aten, Karlee Quaritsch (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.), Snoreck, Sarb and Missy Fobert (Rock Island Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.) all had two hits.
The Vikings are now 5-1 on the season.
