2009 Season - Complete game performances from Grant Loiselle and Kevin Dencker key double header sweep of Maryville in baseball

WINTER HAVEN, Florida – Getting a pair of complete game performances on the mound, the Augustana Vikings swept Maryville in a non-conference double header on Tuesday, March 3 at Chain of Lakes Park in Winter Haven, Florida. Augustana beat Maryville 11-4 in the first game on a two hitter by lefthander Grant Loiselle (Bloomington Central Catholic HS, Normal, Ill.). In the second game righty Kevin Dencker (Cary Grove HS, Fox River Grove, Ill.) tossed a five hit shutout as the Vikings prevailed 3-0. With the two victories Augustana moves to 6-0 on the season.

GAME 1: Augustana 11, Maryville 4

Loiselle allowed just two hits while striking out eight in a seven inning complete game performance. He was hampered by eight walks but his teammates staked him to an 11-0 lead after two innings and he was never really threatened.

In the top of the first inning Mark Ramos (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) led things off with a walk and with one out he stole second base. After advancing to third on a ground out, he scored on a single by Eric Izzo (Lockport HS, Lockport, Ill.). Izzo eventually came around to score on a wild pitch by Maryville starter Pat Devers.

With the 2-0 lead, the Vikings put nine runs on the board in the top of the second inning on six hits and two Maryville errors. Myles Kurnick (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) had a two run single and Mike Barker (Grandview HS, Centennial, Colorado) had a three run double that came with two outs. Augustana sent 14 men to the plate in the inning.
Ramos and Izzo each had two hits in the game.

GAME 2: Augustana 3, Maryville 0

Dencker made the most of his first career start, striking out six while giving up five hits and one walk as he kept Maryville from scoring. He got out of a bases loaded jam in the second and then retired the Saints in order in three of the next four innings. In the top of the seventh he got into a little trouble as Maryville put two runners on with the tying run at the plate but Dencker got a strikeout to end the game.

All of the Augustana scoring came in the bottom of the third inning. Kevin Schuetz (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) led off with a single. After one out Mike Barker (Grandview HS, Centennial, Colorado) walked. Mark Ramos (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) singled to bring home Schuetz with the game’s first run. After a fly out, John Wagle (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) delivered a clutch two out single that drove in Barker and moved Ramos to third. Wagle was picked off first but in the ensuing rundown Ramos scored before the tag could be applied to Wagle to make it 3-0.

That would be all the help Dencker would need as the Vikings played errorless ball in the field behind him.

Ramos and Myles Kurnick (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) each had two hits for Augustana.
