2009 Season - Vikings beat Heidelberg 5-3 in softball
KISSIMMEE, Florida – The Augustana Vikings moved to 3-1 in softball with a 5-3 victory over Heidelberg on Monday, March 2 in Kissimmee, Florida. Trailing 3-2 heading into the top of the fifth inning, the Vikings scored two runs in the fifth and one in the seventh and then rode the outstanding relief pitching of Jackie Gill (Heyworth HS, Heyworth, Ill.) to the win.
Augustana led 2-0 going into the bottom of the fourth when Heidelberg scored three runs off Augustana starter Sheldon Ritzenheimer (Wesclin HS, Trenton, Ill.). In the top of the fifth Jen Sloboda (Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) led off with a double to right center. Missy Fobert (Rock Island Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.) was hit by a pitch. After an out, Christine Trojanowski (Evergreen Park HS, Evergreen Park, Ill.) doubled to left center to score Sloboda and Fobert and give the Vikings the lead. In the top of the seventh Chrissy Rosin (Niles West HS, Morton Grove, Ill.) tripled down the right field line and came home on a single by Trojanowski.
The Vikings collected 10 hits in the game with Trojanowski getting three and Stephanie Sarb (Lisle Township HS, Lisle, Ill.), Rosin and Sloboda each smacking two.
Ritzenheimer pitched well in her starting role, striking out six without a walk and giving up just three hits. She made a mistake to Heidelberg’s Katharine Whittaker in the fourth and Whittaker made her pay with a three run home run.
Gill gave up just one hit and no runs while striking out two in three innings and she picked up the victory, her third of the season against no defeats.
