2009 Season - Vikings push baseball record to 4-0 with 9-0 win over Cornell

WINTER HAVEN, Florida – Mike Pagano (Niles Notre Dame HS, Chicago, Ill.), Kevin Kulig (Benet Academy, Lemont, Ill.) and Vince Frede (St. Charles East HS, St. Charles, Ill.) combined on an eight hit shutout as Augustana defeated Cornell 9-0 to move to 4-0 on the 2009 season. The game was played on Sunday, March 1 at Chain of Lakes Park in Winter Haven, Florida.

Pagano got the start and went seven innings, striking out seven and allowing five hits while Kulig and Frede each worked a single inning.

The Vikings scored two runs in the second, three in the fifth and four in the seventh and benefitted from four Ram errors in the game. Augustana collected 10 hits, nine singles and a double off the bat of Eric Izzo (Lockport HS, Lockport, Ill.).

In the second inning Myles Kurnick (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) led off with a walk and went to second on a single by Kevin Schuetz (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.). Kurnick moved to third and Schuetz to second on a sacrifice bunt by T.J. O’Donnell (New Trier HS, Northbrook, Ill.). Mike Barker (Grandview HS, Centennial, Colo.) hit a ground ball to shortstop and Schuetz was cut down at third but Kurnick scored. Barker stole second and came home on a single by Mark Ramos (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.).

With the score 2-0 the Vikings put three runs on the board in the fifth. Dave Hoffman (Cary Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) singled with one out and John Wagle (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) reached on an error with Hoffman scampering to third and Wagle ending up at second base. Izzo’s single drove in Hoffman with Wagle pulling up at third. A passed ball did not score Wagle but Izzo went to second. Aaron Hopson’s (Rockford Boylan HS, Rockford, Ill.) ball was misplayed in the infield and Wagle scored with Izzo going to third. Kurnick’s sacrifice fly plated Izzo for the third run of the inning.

In the four run seventh the big blow was a two run single by Ramos and Augustana benefitted from a passed ball and a wild pitch.

Schuetz led the offense with three hits while Ramos and Izzo each had two. Ramos collected three RBI in the game.
