2009 Season - Ferrum beats Vikings in softball 7-4
KISSIMMEE, Florida – Ferrum scored six runs in the final three innings and claimed a 7-4 victory over Augustana in softball action on Saturday, February 28 at the Orange County Softball Complex in Kissimmee, Florida. The Panthers also took advantage of three Viking errors.
Augustana took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when Chrissy Rosin (Niles West HS, Morton Grove, Ill.) singled to lead off the game, went to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a single to center field by Melissa Nelson (West Aurora HS, Aurora, Ill.). The Vikings went ahead 2-0 in the top of the third when they pushed another run across. With two outs Nelson walked and scored on a double by Brittany Snoreck (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.).
Ferrum got one run back in the third and then took a 4-2 lead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Augustana tied the game at 4-4 with two runs in the top of the fifth. Christina Trojanowski (Evergreen Park HS, Evergreen Park, Ill.) walked to lead off. She went to second on a sacrifice bunt. Consecutive singles by Nelson and Snoreck scored Trojanowski. Nelson scored on an RBI ground out by Dawn Kernich (Mount Olive HS, Mount Olive, Ill.).
That was all the scoring for the Vikings, however, and Ferrum rang up a single run in the bottom of the fifth and two in the sixth to claim the victory.
Snoreck had three hits and two RBI while Nelson had two hits and one RBI. Sophomore Sheldon Ritzheimer (Wesclin HS, Trenton, Ill.) pitched five innings as the starter, allowing five hits and striking out five but she was hurt by six walks. Senior Jenna Szybowicz (Glenbard North HS, Carol Stream, Ill.), who was the “Pitcher of the Year” in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin as a freshman before being hampered by injuries the last two years, worked two thirds of an inning in the bottom of the sixth. She retired both batters she faced.
