2009 Season - Baseball team smacks 14 hits in 16-9 win over Grove City
WINTER HAVEN, Florida – In a wild affair, Augustana used a six run sixth inning to post a come-from-behind 16-9 victory over Grove City on Friday, February 27 in Winter Haven, Florida at Chain-of-Lakes Park. The Vikings banged out 14 hits, including six doubles as they moved to 3-0 on the season.
Augustana scored two runs in the second, one in the third and three in the fourth and was leading 6-2 heading into the top of the sixth. Kyle Murphy (Lane Tech HS, Chicago, Ill.) cruised into the sixth with a four run lead but ran into trouble. Before the frame ended Grove City had six runs on the board and took an 8-6 lead.
The Vikings got back to work on offense and answered with six runs of their own to go back on top 12-8. Dave Hoffman (Cary Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) led things off with a single and advanced to second on a walk by John Wagle (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.). Eric Izzo (Lockport HS, Lockport, Ill.) reached on an error with Hoffman scoring, Wagle moving to third and Izzo winding up at second on the play. A balk scored Wagle to tie the game at 8-8 and Izzo went to third. Aaron Hopson (Rockford Boylan HS, Rockford, Ill.) reached on an error that scored Izzo to put the Vikings ahead 9-8. After a strike out, Kevin Schuetz (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) doubled to score Hopson and John Vezzetti (LaSalle Peru HS, Peru, Ill.) followed with another double to bring home Schuetz. Michael Barker (Grandview HS, Centennial, Colo.) walked. A passed ball moved Barker to second and Vezzetti to third. Mark Ramos (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) then lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to score Vezzetti with the sixth run of the inning.
For insurance purposes Augustana scored three runs in the seventh. Wagle and Izzo opened the inning with singles and Hopson was hit by pitch to load the bases. Mike Lamb (Ottawa HS, Ottawa, Ill.) doubled to clear the bases and give the Vikings a 15-8 lead.
Jon Carlson (Glenbrook South HS, Glenview, Ill.) worked the final 3 1/3 innings and gave up just one run on two hits while striking out three. He picked up his first victory of the season.
Izzo had three hits while Ramos, Hoffman, Wagle, Schuetz and Vezzetti all had two each. Ramos and Lamb both had three RBI. Schuetz had two doubles while Ramos, Izzo, Lamb and Vezzetti all had one.
