2009 Season - Vikings win second game of baseball season by 11-2 margin over Hanover

WINTER PARK, Florida – Junior Matt Erickson (Marmion Academy, Channahon, Ill.) pitched seven strong innings and senior Mark Ramos (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) sparked the offense as Augustana defeated Hanover 11-2 in baseball action on February 25 in Winter Park, Florida. Erickson went seven innings, scattering nine hits while striking out four and not allowing a walk. Ramos was all over the place on offense, collecting four hits, scoring three runs and driving in three from his leadoff position.

The Vikings jumped on Hanover starter Nik Kahl in the bottom of the first inning, collecting a pair of runs. Ramos singled, stole second, went to third on a ground out and scored on a double by Eric Izzo (Lockport HS, Homer Township, Ill.). Izzo tallied on a single by Aaron Hopson (Rockford Guilford HS, Rockford, Ill.).

Erickson gave up a single run in the top of the second but his teammates put six on the board in the bottom of the third to break the game wide open. Michael Barker (Grandview HS, Centennial, Colo.) got things started with a single to lead off the inning. Ramos doubled him home and then scored on a double by Dave Hoffman (Cary Grove HS, Cary, Ill.).

Hoffman went to third on a single by John Wagle (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.). Izzo forced Wagle at second and Myles Kurnick (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) walked to load the bases. Kevin Schuetz (St. Charles East HS, St. Charles, Ill.) reached on an error that scored Hoffman and kept the bases loaded. T.J. O’Donnell (New Trier HS, Northbrook, Ill.) then ripped a double that scored Izzo, Kurnick and Schuetz.

O’Donnell homered to lead off the sixth and Barker doubled. Ramos delivered a single that plated Barker to make it 10-1.
In Erickson’s last inning he gave up a run when Kyle Barnett doubled to score Will Pappano, who had doubled. Erickson struck out Chris Neumann looking to end the threat. Ramos homered in the eighth to end the scoring.

Erickson gave way Grant Loiselle (Bloomington Central Catholic HS, Normal, Ill.) in the eighth. Loiselle was perfect in his one inning and then Vince Frede (St. Charles East HS, St. Charles, Ill.) struck out two in the ninth to preserve the victory.

Besides Ramos’ offensive production, O’Donnell and Barker each had two hits. O’Donnell collected four RBI. The Vikings banged out 12 hits in the game.

Augustana is now 2-0 on the season while Hanover falls to 0-5. The Vikings are off on Thursday, February 26 before playing Grove City on Friday, February 27.
