2008-09 Season - Women's basketball team falls to Carthage
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The Augustana women’s basketball team jumped out to an early lead against Carthage, but eventually fell 63-50 to the Lady Reds in the final game of the season on Tuesday, February 24 in Rock Island, Illinois. The Vikings finish the year with a 3-22 overall record and a 1-13 mark in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin.
Four different Vikings scored in the early going as Augustana grabbed an 11-6 lead just over six minutes into the contest. Freshman Natalie Runge (St. Dominic HS, O’Fallon, Mo.) scored the first basket of the night and freshman Kristina Howard (Cherokee Trail HS, Aurora, Colo.) added four points during the run for Vikings. Senior Sarah Rachwalski (Amos Alonzo Stagg HS, Palos Hills, Ill.) made a basket to give Augustana its biggest lead of the night at 10-4.
Carthage knotted the game at 11-11 at the 9:41 mark and the teams traded the lead back and forth for the rest of the first stanza. Augustana pulled ahead 19-14 with a 6-0 spurt, but the Lady Reds closed on a 7-2 run to earn a slight 23-21 edge at intermission.
The visitors continued to shoot well in the first minutes of the second half and raced out to a nine point advantage at 33-24. The Lady Reds started to take control of the game with the biggest lead of the night. Lisa Gartelos scored six of her game high 18 points during the stretch for Carthage.
Augustana still trailed by nine points at 37-28 when the Vikings made a comeback. Freshman Allie Scaggs (Petersburg Porta HS, Petersburg, Ill.) knocked down a three point field goal to make the score 37-31 and freshman Brianna Skeens (Vernon Hills HS, Vernon Hills, Ill.) made a pair of charity tosses as the Vikings pulled even closer. A three point play by junior Kristen Fox (Ottawa HS, Ottawa, Ill.) brought Augustana within one and the Blue & Gold regained the advantage, 38-37, when sophomore Lisa Smith (Lemont HS, Lemont, Ill.) nailed a jumper to complete a 10-0 run with 9:36 remaining.
Once again, Gartelos came to the rescue for Carthage, connecting on two consecutive jumpers to put the Lady Reds back in front to stay. The visitors held off Augustana down the stretch to earn the road victory.
Fox came off the bench to lead the Vikings with 14 points. Runge also scored in double figures with 10 points. Rachwalski scored nine points and made two steals in her final game for Augustana.
Rosie Dorn joined Gartelos in double figures with 11 points for the visitors. Katherine Bursheim came off the bench to score nine points and grab eight rebounds.
