2009 Season - Vikings open baseball season with 4-1 win over Hanover
WINTER HAVEN, Florida – A strong combined effort on the mound from juniors Mike Pagano (Niles Notre Dame HS, Chicago, Ill.) and Kevin Kulig (Benet Academy, Lemont, Ill.) paved the way as Augustana opened the 2009 season with a 4-1 win over Hanover in Winter Park, Florida at Chain of Lakes Park. Pagano started and worked five innings, picking up the win while striking out seven and scattering five hits before giving way to Kulig. Kulig struck out three and gave up two hits in four innings as he notched the save.
Dave Hoffman (Cary Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) had two hits, two runs-batted-in and a walk to key the offense while John Wagle (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) added a pair of hits.
Mark Ramos (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) got things started quickly for the Vikings when he led off the game with a triple and eventually scored on Hoffman’s single. Hanover tied the game in the bottom of the second when Will Pappano’s single brought home Jared Gluff, who had reached on a fielder’s choice.
The Vikings put two runs on the board in the top of the fourth when Aaron Hopson (Rockford Boylan HS, Rockford, Ill.) and Myles Kurnick (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) both scored on an error during a sacrifice bunt attempt by John Vezzetti (LaSalle Peru HS, Peru, Ill.). In the ninth Augustana got an insurance run when Vezzetti singled and eventually scored on Hoffman’s double.
