2009-10 Season - Augustana men's swimmers finish sixth in 200 freestyle and 400 medley relays at first day of CCIW Championship
WHEATON, Illinois – Sophomore Drew Clinton (Riverside-Brookfield HS, Brookfield, Ill.), sophomore Joseph Waldorf (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.), junior Eric Zike (Ridgeview HS, Colfax, Ill.), and senior Danny Betz (DeKalb HS, DeKalb, Ill.) combined for a sixth place finish in the 200 freestyle relay at the first day of the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin championship on Thursday, February 19 at Wheaton College. The group had a clocking of 1:31.61 in the event. Zike, freshman Michael Whittle (Galesburg HS, Galesburg, Ill.), Betz, and Clinton were also sixth in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:50.06.
With one day of competition in the books, Carthage leads the way with 309 points. Wheaton is in second at 182 with Illinois Wesleyan holding down the third spot with 156. Rose-Hulman has 104 points in fourth place with Millikin close behind in the fifth slot with 94. Augustana and North Central are tied for sixth, each totaling 52 points on the first day of the meet.
The 200 freestyle and 400 medley relays were the best races for the Vikings on Thursday. Not only did the team receive points from a sixth place finish in each event, but the second team for the Vikings added a 13th place showing in both races. Freshman Denny Wind (Downers Grove North HS, Downers Grove, Ill.), senior Ian Gustafson (Rockford Jefferson HS, Cherry Valley, Ill.), freshman Robert Flynn (Bartlett HS, Bartlett, Ill.), and senior Jason Perine (Plainfield South HS, Plainfield, Ill.) finished with a time of 1:35.64 in the 200 freestyle relay. Waldorf, Perine, Gustafson, and Flynn completed the 400 medley relay in a time of 4:04.52.
