2008-2009 Season - Behind second place finishes from Kyle Brodwater (125), Andrew Randone (133) and Matt Nykaza (197), Vikings take third in CCIW wrestling tournament

WHEATON, Illinois – Fueled by three individual runner-up finishes, the Augustana Vikings placed third in the 2009 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin wrestling tournament on Saturday, February 14 at Wheaton College. North Central won the team title with 98.5 points while Elmhurst was second with 85. Augustana was third with 48.5 and Wheaton placed fourth with 33.5.

The Vikings continue to show improvement as they were fourth in 2008 with 34.5 points and fifth in 2007 with 33.5 points. Second year head coach Eric Juergens’ team was led by the second place finishes of junior Kyle Brodwater (St. Joseph Hamm HS, Medford, New Jersey), senior Andrew Randone (Davenport Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa) and sophomore Matt Nykaza (Brother Rice HS, Oak Lawn, Ill.). In addition, Augustana also had four third place finishes in the tournament.

Brodwater, who leads the team with a 20-10 overall record, was pinned in the championship match at 125 pounds by Jake Oster of Elmhurst at 4:59. Brodwater, the third seed in the tournament, knocked off second seeded Joe Norton of North Central 6-4 in the semi finals.

Randone, the second seed at 133 pounds, beat Sean Tomas of North Central 3-1 in the semi finals before being pinned by Jake Denhof of Elmhurst in the finals at 6:22. Randone is now 8-4 on the season.

Nykaza, who has improved as the season has progressed, scored a 6-2 upset of second seeded Bernie Vazquez of Elmhurst in the semi finals at 197 pounds. He lost in the championship match to Vinnie Sapienza of North Central by a count of 16-5. Nykaza is now 6-15 on the year.

Freshman Alberto Quiros (Morton HS, Cicero, Ill.) at 141, sophomore Zac Holland (West Des Moines Dowling HS, Pleasant Hill, Iowa) at 149, freshman Matt McIntyre (West Carroll HS, Savanna, Ill.) at 157 and senior Brian Kerr (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) at 197 all recorded third place finishes.

Quiros lost a tough 2-0 decision to top seeded Jamie Devine of North Central in the semi final before bouncing back to pin Jeff Coners of Wheaton at 3:42 for third place. Holland fell to second seeded Charlie Curran of Elmhurst 12-2 in the semi finals but destroyed Matt Cordell of Wheaton 12-2 in the third place match. McIntyre lost to second seeded Nick Parrish of Elmhurst 21-7 in the semi finals. Kerr dropped his semi final match to second seeded Gabe Yoel of North Central 4-1 but came back to beat Garrett Washington of Elmhurst 4-1 in the third place match.

Sophomores Kris Kovach (Oswego HS, Oswego, Ill.) at 165 and Gabe Gardner (Air Academy, Colorado Springs, Colo.) at 174 finished fourth for the Vikings.
