2008-09 Season - Women's basketball falls to Elmhurst 61-51
ROCK ISLAND, Illinois – The Augustana Vikings struggled at the free throw lines and it cost them dearly in a 61-51 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin loss at home to Elmhurst on Saturday, February 7. The Vikings connected on just nine of 25 (.360) from the charity stripe in the defeat.
Elmhurst never trailed in the game but Augustana kept the margin in single digits for the entire first half and trailed 27-22 at intermission. In the second half the Bluejays extended the advantage to 11 points (37-26) at 13:14 thanks to a 10-4 run coming out of the locker room. Eventually the lead would reach 16 points (44-28) with 11:28 left to play.
The Vikings managed to trim things to nine points (60-51) with 2:20 to play on a basket by Sarah Rachwalski (Stagg HS, Palos Hills, Ill.) but could get no closer.
Elmhurst to 20 points from Lyndsie Long, who was seven of 15 from the field and 13 points out of Meghan Merklein, who went six of eight from the floor. The Bluejays shot .444 (24-54) from the field for the game and .500 (13-26) in the second half.
Augustana was led in scoring by Lani Kasten (Forreston HS, German Valley, Ill.) with nine points and Kasten also hauled in a game high eight rebounds. She also added five assists and one blocked shot.
Elmhurst moved to 11-9 overall and 4-5 in the CCIW while Augustana fell to 3-18 and 1-9.
