2009-10 Season - Augustana men's swim team finishes a close second at Panther Invite

ELSAH, Ill. – The Augustana women’s team won its second straight team title, winning the Panther Invitational hosted by Principia on Saturday, January 31 in Elsah, Illinois with a team total of 557 points.  The Vikings defeated Millikin (475), Principia (394), and Rose-Hulman (374).  The Viking men also turned in a strong showing, scoring 588 points to finish a close second behind Rose-Hulman (600).  Millikin finished third (465) and Principia took fourth (222).

MEN: Although the Vikings did not win any events, the Blue & Gold put together a balanced attack throughout the meet, displaying the team’s improved depth this season.  Freshman Denny Wind (Downers Grove North HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) turned in the best finish at the meet with a second place performance in the 400 individual medley (5:20.24).  This was the best event of the day for Augustana, with junior Jake Glimco (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) finishing third (5:28.83) and sophomore Brian Tuinenga (Glenbard South HS, Glen Ellyn, Ill.) crossing the finish line in fourth (5:44.52).  Augustana also had multiple top-five finishers in the 1650 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, and 50 freestyle.  Glimco earned the third spot in the 1650 free (20:17.51) with sophomore Derek Sanderson (Lincoln Way East HS, Tinley Park, Ill.) right on his heels in fourth place (20:17.82).  Freshman Michael Whittle (Galesburg HS, Galesburg, Ill.) took fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.66) and senior Jason Perine (Plainfield South HS, Plainfield, Ill.) finished fifth (1:09.23).  Sophomore Drew Clinton (Riverside-Brookfield HS, Brookfield, Ill.) grabbed the fourth position in the 50 freestyle (:23.62) and senior Danny Betz (DeKalb HS, DeKalb, Ill.) hit the finish right behind him in fifth place (:23.95). 

Senior Rob Emerson (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) scored third place points for Augustana in the one meter diving event (232.70 points) and three meter diving event (214.55 points).  Senior Ian Gustafson (Rockford Jefferson HS, Cherry Valley, Ill.) finished third in the 200 butterfly (2:30.62) and Sanderson took third in the 500 freestyle (5:22.96).  Betz was fourth in the 100 butterfly (:57.94) and junior Eric Zike (Ridgeview HS, Colfax, Ill.) earned a fifth place showing in the 200 backstroke (2:15.95).  Clinton came home with a fifth place finish in the 100 freestyle (:55.13) and Whittle took the fifth spot in the 200 breaststroke (2:37.30).

The Vikings also scored points in both relay races, finishing third in the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays.  Zike, Whittle, Clinton and Betz combined for a clocking of 1:46.27 in the 200 medley relay.  Sophomore Joseph Waldorf (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.), Perine, Zike, and Betz finished with a time of 3:36.97 in the 400 freestyle relay.

WOMEN: The Augustana women’s team earned five individual titles and one relay win on the way to the team crown.  Junior Sara Hlavin (St. Viator HS, Elk Grove Village, Ill.) won the 200 backstroke (2:27.07) and the 400 individual medley (5:03.18).  Senior Megan Lonergan (Bettendorf HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) also brought home a pair of individual wins, finishing first in the 200 butterfly (2:17.60) and the 500 freestyle (5:22.96).  Sophomore Emily Cox (Pioneer HS, Ann Arbor, Mich.) was the third Viking to earn a top finish in an individual event, winning the 200 freestyle (2:07.57).  Freshman Jessica Fair (Ashton-Franklin Center HS, Franklin Grove, Ill.), freshman Alissa Giedd (Freeport HS, Cedarville, Ill.), Cox, and Lonergan also won the 400 freestyle relay (3:57.62).

Fair was second in the 50 freestyle (:27.17) and also runner-up in the 100 freestyle (:57.54).  Hlavin took second in the 200 freestyle (2:07.85).  Junior Emma Moran (Bettendorf HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) earned the second spot in the 100 butterfly (1:12.87) and fourth in the 200 butterfly (2:45.42). Sophomore Tonya Walter (Prospect HS, Mt. Prospect, Ill.) finished second in the one meter diving event (175.50 points) and was also third in the three meter diving event (153.55 points).  Giedd finished third in the 50 freestyle (:27.75) and fourth in the 100 freestyle (1:00.11).  Cox gave Augustana three of the top four finishers in the 100 freestyle race, finishing third (1:00.04).  Freshman Colleen Mans (Robbinsdale Cooper HS, New Hope, Minn.) finished in the third position in the 100 backstroke (1:08.79) and the 200 backstroke (2:27.65).  Senior Laura Anderson (Redwood Valley HS, Redwood Falls, Minn.) earned the fourth spot in the 200 breaststroke (3:03.99) and senior Mary Galloway (Schaumburg HS, Schaumburg, Ill.) came in next in fifth place (3:08.23).  Junior Kaitlyn Babicz (Charlotte Catholic HS, Oconomowoc, Wis.) finished fifth in the 1650 freestyle (22:25.83).

Hlavin, Fair, Lonergan, and Giedd also combined for a second place finish in the 200 medley relay, hitting the finish line in a time of 2:05.63.
