2008-2009 Season - Vikings wrestle at Pete Willson Invitational
WHEATON, Illinois – The Augustana wrestling team competed at the Pete Willson Invitational on the campus of Wheaton College on Friday, January 30 and Saturday, January 31. The Vikings scored 11.5 points and placed 29th among the 31 teams.
Junior Kyle Brodwater (St. Joseph Hamm HS, Medford, New Jersey) won his first two matches at 125 pounds to advance to the quarterfinal round. He beat Caleb Cardenas of Wheaton 4-2 to open things up and then beat Dan Crowley of Concordia 6-3. In the quarterfinals he fell to fourth seeded Max Oldenburg of Wisconsin-Whitewater 4-1 and then was eliminated in the consolation round when he was pinned by Ethan Miller of Mt. St. Joseph.
Junior Zac Holland (West Des Moines Dowling HS, Pleasant Hill, Iowa) lost his first match at 149 pounds by a score of 9-2 to Jason Fitzenreider of North Central. He then bounced back to pin Eric Bednash of Concordia (6:26) and Ronnie Cuff of Elizabeth (2:06). His tournament run ended with a 12-0 loss to Matt Schuck of Wisconsin-Whitewater by a score of 12-0.
Senior Brian Kerr (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) beat Anthony DeMarko of Elizabethtown 6-1 in his first match at 184 pounds. He dropped a 5-2 decision to eighth seeded David Casper of Wisconsin-Whiterwater in the round of 16. Kerr then beat Nathan Deisem of Messiah 17-7 and Garrett Washington of Elmhurst 11-7 before falling to sixth seeded Toby Boltz of Wheaton 9-4.
