2008-09 Season - Kristen Fox pours in 22 points as Vikings beat North Park 70-53

Junior Kristen Fox (Ottawa HS, Ottawa, Ill.) came off the bench and fired in a game high 22 points to help lead Augustana to a 70-57 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin victory over North Park on Saturday, January 31 in the Carver Center. The victory snapped a nine game losing streak by the Vikings, who had not won since beating Peace College on December 20 in the South Padre Island Shootout.

Fox hit on nine of 21 field goals, including a trio of three point field goals, grabbed six rebounds, dished out six assists and had four steals.

Augustana never trailed in the contest and the game was only tied twice, at 2-2 and 4-4 in the early going. The Vikings went on a 14-1 run early to make the score 18-5 with 10:32 left to play in the first half. North Park scrambled back and two straight field goals by LaRae Kostreva allowed the visitors to trim the margin to 25-22 with 3:10 remaining in the first stanza.

The Viking defense held North Park to just a single free throw for the rest of the half and a basket by Natalie Runge (St. Dominic HS, O’Fallon, Mo.) and two by Fox allowed Augustana to take a 31-23 lead into the locker room at halftime.
In the second half North Park cut the margin to 33-30 at the 16:51 mark on a basket by Hilary Kuhl but Augustana answered with a 7-0 run to push the gap to double digits (40-30) with 14:11 left to play in the game. The margin continued to grow and with 5:15 left it reached 20 points (62-42).

Besides Fox, the Vikings got 18 points and seven rebounds from Runge and 10 points off the bench from Dawn Kernich (Mt. Olive HS, Mt. Olive, Ill.). Augustana held the edge in rebounding by a margin of 41-40 and forced North Park to shoot just .322 (19-59) from the field, including .267 (8-30) in the first half.

Senior guard Sarah Rachwalski (Stagg HS, Palos Hills, Ill.) had six assists and three steals with no turnovers in 32 minutes of play and Lani Kasten (Forreston HS, German Valley, Ill.) added seven points, a team high eight rebounds, four assists and one steal.

North Park was led in scoring by Larisa Coldebella and Kostreva with 13 points each. Kostreva led the team in rebounding with nine.

Augustana is now 3-16 overall and 1-7 in the CCIW while North Park is 3-14 and 0-7.
