2008-09 Season - Augustana women's basketball team unable to get past Carthage in 64-38 road loss
KENOSHA, Wis. – A cold shooting night hurt the Augustana women’s basketball team on Tuesday, January 27 in a 64-38 loss at Carthage in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The Vikings only managed 19 points in each half and are now 2-6 overall and 0-7 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin.
The contest was tight in the opening minutes as Augustana grabbed its first lead of the night after freshman Natalie Runge (St. Dominic HS, O’Fallon, Mo.) converted a three point play put the visitors in front, 5-4. A lay-up from freshman Kristina Howard (Cherokee Trail HS, Aurora, Colo.) extended the lead to 7-4 at the 16:09 mark. Senior Sarah Rachwalski (Amos Alonzo Stagg HS, Palos Hills, Ill.), who led the Vikings with nine points, tacked on a free throw, and junior Kristen Fox (Ottawa HS, Ottawa, Ill.) connected on a jumper to put the Vikings back in the lead, 10-9, after a three point field goal from the Lady Reds.
Carthage responded with an 8-0 spurt to regain the lead and never trailed the rest of the way. A basket by sophomore Lisa Smith (Lemont HS, Lemont, Ill.) cut the deficit to 17-12 at the 9:26 mark, but the Lady Reds forged ahead for a 32-19 advantage at halftime.
The Viking deficit quickly grew to 20 points in the second half as Carthage scored the first seven points of the final stanza to move ahead 39-19. Augustana scored 15 points in the final eight minutes, outscoring the Lady Reds 15-7 down the stretch, but it was not enough as the Vikings fell on the road.
Rachwalski (pictured above), shot well from the floor, hitting three of her five field goal attempts, and also knocking down two of her three free throw attempts. Fox added seven points for the Vikings.
