2009-10 Season - Men's swimming wins Eureka Invite in dominating fashion
EUREKA, Ill. – The Augustana men put on a dominating performance at the Eureka Invitational on Saturday, January 24 in Eureka, Illinois, scoring 647 points and finishing 485 points ahead of runner-up Knox (162). The Viking women also walked away with a team title, finishing with 389 points and defeating Knox (363). Principia (152.5), Hannibal-LaGrange (122.5), Eureka (102), and Illinois College (82) completed the men’s field. Hannibal-LaGrange (284), Principia (168), Eureka (125), and Illinois College (115) rounded out the women’s competition. The Vikings also won the combined competition, scoring victories in two of the three combined relays.
MEN: Augustana won six individual events, led by a pair of titles from junior Eric Zike (Ridgeview HS, Colfax, Ill.). He earned the top spot in the 100 backstroke (1:01.00) and the 50 backstroke (:27.99). Freshman Denny Wind (Downers Grove North HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) took first in the 200 freestyle (2:04.99) and freshman Michael Whittle (Galesburg HS, Galesburg, Ill.) won the 100 breaststroke (1:07.39). Sophomore Drew Clinton (Riverside-Brookfield HS, Brookfield, Ill.) was the champion in the 50 butterfly (:25.54) and senior Danny Betz (DeKalb HS, DeKalb, Ill.) came away with a victory in the 100 individual medley (1:00.95), narrowly beating Zike to the finish.
Clinton scored a couple second place finishes in the 100 freestyle (:52.85) and the 100 butterfly (1:02.57). Other runner-up performances for Augustana came from sophomore Derek Sanderson (Lincoln Way East HS, Tinley Park, Ill.) in the 200 freestyle (2:05.82), Betz in the 50 butterfly (:25.83), Whittle in the 50 breaststroke (:30.35), and Zike in the 100 individual medley (1:00.99).
Senior Jason Perine (Plainfield South HS, Plainfield, Ill.) turned in a trio of third place finishes. He was the third swimmer to hit the finish line in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.71), 100 freestyle (:56.05), and 50 breaststroke (:32.08). Junior Jake Glimco (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) and sophomore Joseph Waldorf (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) were each third in two different races. Glimco earned the third spot in the 100 backstroke (1:09.85) and the 50 backstroke (:32.00). Waldorf placed third in the 50 butterfly (:26.70) and the 100 butterfly (1:03.44).
WOMEN: Senior Megan Lonergan (Bettendorf HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) put together another successful showing by winning three individual races. She was first in the 200 freestyle (2:04.76), 50 butterfly (:30.25), and 100 butterfly (1:06.50). Freshman Jessica Fair (Ashton-Franklin Center HS, Franklin Grove, Ill.) was also an individual champion, taking top honors in the 50 freestyle (:26.60). Freshman Alissa Giedd (Freeport HS, Cedarville, Ill.) won the fifth title for the Vikings with a victory in the 100 freestyle (:59.86).
Junior Sara Hlavin (St. Viator HS, Elk Grove Village, Ill.) tallied runner-up finishes in the 50 backstroke (:32.86) and the 100 individual medley (1:09.66). Giedd took second in the 200 freestyle (2:12.92), Fair was second in the 100 breaststroke (1:17.97), and sophomore Emily Cox (Pioneer HS, Ann Arbor, Mich.) finished second in the 100 freestyle (1:00.37).
Freshman Colleen Mans (Robbinsdale Cooper HS, New Hope, Minn.) earned the third slot in the 50 backstroke (:33.70) and was fourth in the 100 backstroke (1:10.02). Junior Emma Moran (Bettendorf HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) took fourth in the 100 butterfly (1:16.74).
Zike, Hlavin, Betz, and Fair combined to win the second heat of the mixed 200 medley relay (1:55.71) and Mans, Perine, Lonergan, and Waldorf were second in the first heat of the event (1:57.24). Clinton, Fair, Giedd, and Betz closed out the invite with a title in the mixed 200 freestyle relay (1:41.68).
