2009-10 Season - Viking men finish fifth at Grinnell Invite
GRINNELL, Iowa – The Augustana swimming teams maintained fourth and fifth place at the Grinnell Invitational throughout the final day of competition on Saturday, January 17. The Viking women finished with 216 points to place fourth behind Luther (631), Grinnell (497), and Macalester (370). Augustana finished ahead of Nebraska-Kearney (167), Coe (134), Morningside (104), and Simpson (40). The Viking men held onto the fifth position, ending the two day event with 158 points. Luther won the men’s team title with 745 points, followed by Grinnell (494), Iowa Central CC (260), and Macalester (174). Morningside (124) and Coe (106) finished behind Augustana to round out the field.
MEN: Senior Rob Emerson (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) finished second in a diving event for the second day in a row, earning runner-up honors in the one meter dive with 355.20 points. Sophomore Drew Clinton (Riverside-Brookfield HS, Brookfield, Ill.) scored points in two events, finishing 10th in the 50 freestyle (:23.86) and 11th in the 100 butterfly (:59.58). Senior Danny Betz (DeKalb HS, DeKalb, Ill.) also scored in the 100 butterfly, finishing in the eighth spot with a clocking of :57.86. Junior Eric Zike (Ridgeview HS, Colfax, Ill.) also contributed in the individual races with a ninth place showing in the 200 backstroke (2:15.31).
The Vikings also scored points in a pair of relay races on the second day of the meet. Zike, freshman Michael Whittle (Galesburg HS, Galesburg, Ill.), Betz, and Clinton earned a seventh place finish in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:47.01. Clinton, Zike, Betz, and freshman Mark Hillstrom (Naperville Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) took the 10th spot in the 400 freestyle relay, hitting the finish in 3:39.92.
WOMEN: Senior Megan Lonergan (Bettendorf HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) capped of a terrific weekend with her third title, this time winning the 1650 freestyle race with a time of 18:09.64. She was also second in the 100 butterfly (1:04.61). Sophomore Emily Cox (Pioneer HS, Ann Arbor, Mich.) also scored in the 1650 freestyle race, finishing fourth with a time of 20:00.68. Freshman Jessica Fair (Ashton-Franklin Center HS, Franklin Grove, Ill.) grabbed the sixth spot in the 50 freestyle (:26.98) and junior Sara Hlavin (St. Viator HS, Elk Grove Village, Ill.) was eighth in the 400 individual medley.
Hlavin, Cox, Fair, and Lonergan continued to have success in the relay races, scoring in two more events on Saturday. The group was fourth in the 400 freestyle relay with a clocking of 3:56.60 and finished with a time of 2:06.34 in the 200 medley relay, earning ninth place.
