2008-2009 Season - Vikings drop close match to Wheaton in wrestling
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The Augustana Vikings came close to notching their second victory of the season but fell to Wheaton by a score of 25-20 at the Carver Center on Wednesday, January 14. Augustana won four of the first five matches to take a 20-6 lead but could not claim a victory after the 157 pound weight class.
Kyle Brodwater (St. Joseph Hamm HS, Medford, New Jersey) got things started well for Augustana with a 4-1 victory over Caleb Cardenas at 125 pounds. Brodwater moved his record to a team leading 12-5 with the win. Andrew Randone (Davenport Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa) pinned Johnathan Sbraccia at 2:36 of the 133 pound weight class to stake the Vikings to a 9-0 lead.
A Wheaton pin at 141 narrowed the gap to 9-6 but Zac Holland (West Des Moines Dowling HS, Pleasant Hill, Iowa) came through with a technical fall (16-0) at 6:51 of the 149 pound match with Matt Cordell. Kris Kovach (Oswego HS, Oswego, Ill.) won by forfeit at 157 pounds to make it 20-6.
That would be all the scoring for the Vikings, however as Wheaton won the last five weight classes to take the match 25-20.
Augustana is now 1-6 on the season while Wheaton went to 5-4.
