2009 Season - 2007 WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD REVIEW
Meghan Voiland wins pole vault at NCAA Division III meet and places third in triple jump; Marissa Banks earns All-America honors in shot put and discus; Vikings finish ninth in nation; Five school records fall during the course of the season
Senior Meghan Voiland (Yorkville HS, Yorkville, Ill.) capped one of the most storied careers in Augustana athletic history with an individual national title at the NCAA Division III track & field championships, which were held in
Voiland was not the only Augustana athlete to gain All-America recognition at the national meet as freshman Marissa Banks (Ames HS, Ames, Iowa) placed third in the discus with a toss of 142’ 5” and sixth in the shot with a mark of 44’ 3 ¼”. The effort in the discus was particularly significant because it came on her last throw and she went into the finals with the ninth best throw in the nine-person final.
The Vikings placed ninth in the nation with 25 points and that came on the heels of a season that had them ranked eighth in the final NCAA Division III national dual meet poll. Five school records fell during the campaign which also saw Augustana take second in the College Conference of
Augustana just missed winning its first CCIW title since a string of nine straight ended in 2001, finishing only 8.5 points out of first place at the conference meet, which was held at North Central on May 4-5. North Central won the team title with 207.5 points and the Vikings were second with 199. Voiland was named the “Field Athlete of the Meet” after she won the pole vault with a clearance of 12’ 8 ¼” and the triple jump with a leap of 38’ 5”. She was second in the long jump with a mark of 18’ 0 ¼” and second in the 100 hurdles in :14.92. Head coach Fred Whiteside and his assistants were named “Coaching
Banks was a double winner in the shot and discus, tossing the shot 44’ 2 ¾” and taking the discus with a heave of 134’ 9”. As a team the Vikings won the Early Spring Opener and the Viking Olympics, finished second in the Augustana Invitational and placed third in the Lee Calhoun Invitational. Six athletes qualified for the NCAA Division III national meet, competing in a total of nine events.
Voiland was named the team’s Most Valuable Performer and she was also named as a winner of the prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. Banks, Fedler and Samantha Laskowski (Reavis HS,
