2009 Season - 2008 VOLLEYBALL REVIEW

Vikings finish second in CCIW tournament for second year in a row; End up campaign with 23-12 overall record; Jaime Spolum sets career record for assists

First year head coach Janelle Hester made quite a mark in her rookie season at the helm of the Augustana volleyball program. The Vikings finished the season with a fine 23-12 overall record and for the second consecutive year advanced to the title game of the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin tournament.

In addition, the team notched the third highest single season victory total in school history with the 23-12 mark. The school record is 29 set by Liesl Fowler’s 2001 club that went 29-5, tied for the CCIW title and advanced to the NCAA tournament. The 2000 team, also coached by Fowler, posted 24 wins (24-10). Fowler had two teams win 23 matches – the 1992 team went 23-17 and the 1996 unit was 23-12. The Vikings also won 23 matches in 2002 (23-17) under the direction of Betsy Knott.

Senior setter Jaime Spolum (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) put the finishing touches on a brilliant career as the school record holder for career assists. Spolum, who had 654 assists in 118 games this year (5.54 average), ended with 4,257 assists. She broke the old record of 4,050 set by Kiersten Madden (1998-01) on October 7 in a 3-0 home victory over Mount Mercy. Spolum also finished her career in fifth place on the all-time list in service aces with 134.

Sophomore Courtney Jungnickel (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) led the team in kills with a 2.39 average (304 in 127 games) while also averaging 3.01 digs (382 in 127). Jungnickel topped the Vikings in service aces with 49 (0.39 average).

Junior Mallory Thelander (Evanston HS, Evanston, Ill.) averaged 2.07 kills (253 in 122) and junior Angela Baumgartner (Princeton HS, Princeton, Ill.) checked in at 1.78 kills (174 in 98). Baumgartner led the team in blocks with 94 (34 solo and 60 assists) for an average of 0.96. Sophomore Jackie Rust (Addison Trail HS, Addison, Ill.) topped the team in digs with a 3.30 average (402 in 122 games).

Baumgartner and Rust were named to the all-tournament team in the CCIW tournament on Saturday, November 8 and Baumgartner was selected to the ESPN – The Magazine academic all-district team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) earlier in the week.

The Vikings started the season with seven consecutive victories including a tournament championship at the Star Volleyball Classic in River Forest, Illinois. The first loss came to nationally ranked Wisconsin-Oshkosh on September 6 at the Wisconsin-Platteville tournament. At that same tournament Augustana defeated Wisconsin-Platteville for the first time since the 2002 season.  Later on in the season, on September 27, the Vikings gave Wisconsin-Oshkosh, which was ranked eighth in the nation at the time, its first loss of the year.

One of the highlights of the season came on Tuesday, October 7 in a home non-conference match with Mount Mercy. On that night Spolum became the school’s career assist leader, breaking the old mark of 4,050 set by Madden. The record breaker came, fittingly enough, when Spolum set fellow senior Lisa Neverman (West Delaware HS, Manchester, Iowa) up for a crushing kill. Augustana won the match 3-0 and Spolum would eventually end her career with 4,257 assists.

For the second consecutive season the Augustana Vikings placed second in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin volleyball tournament. Seeded sixth heading into the week, first year head coach Janelle Hester’s team knocked off the third and second seeds before falling to top seeded Carthage in the championship match in Kenosha, Wisconsin on Saturday, November 8. The Vikings beat third seed Illinois Wesleyan 3-0 (25-23; 25-21; 25-22) on Tuesday, November 4 in Bloomington, Illinois. Then they took out second seed North Central 3-1 (27-25; 22-25; 25-14; 25-20) on Friday, November 7 in Kenosha, Wisconsin before losing to Carthage 3-1 (18-25; 25-15; 25-10; 25-23) on Saturday, November 8 in Kenosha. Baumgartner and Rust were named to the all-tournament team in the CCIW tournament.

Spolum, Jungnickel and Baumgartner were named to the all-conference team at the end of the season. Spolum was tabbed for the third consecutive season while Jungnickel made it for the second straight year. Spolum and Jungnickel shared the team’s MVP honors and Jenna Loncar (Marist HS, Chicago, Ill.) was named the Most Improved Player. Baumgartner won the Academic Achievement Award and Jackie Dickens (Hoffman Estates HS, Hoffman Estates, Ill.) was the winner of the Viking Award.
