2008-09 Season - Vikings drops women's basketball CCIW road opener at Elmhurst 86-59
ELMHURST, Ill. – The Augustana women’s basketball team found itself in a hole early in the contest and could not recover, falling 86-59 at Elmhurst on Saturday, January 10 in Elmhurst, Illinois. The Vikings drop to 2-11 overall and 0-2 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin.
Trailing 16-4, senior Sarah Rachwalski (Amos Alonzo Stagg HS, Palos Hills, Ill.) nailed a three point field goal and freshman Natalie Runge (St. Dominic HS, O’Fallon, Mo.) followed with a lay-up to cut the deficit to seven points with 12:13 in the first half. The teams traded baskets over the next few minutes and Augustana was within striking distance, down only nine points at 24-15 at the 8:09 mark.
The Bluejays responded with a 22-6 run to grab a commanding 46-21 lead at the 1:36 mark. Augustana scored the final six points of the first half, including the last four points from freshman Kristina Howard (Cherokee Trail HS, Aurora, Colo.), to close within 46-27 at intermission.
Elmhurst maintained the lead throughout the second half, outscoring the Vikings 40-32 in the final 20 minutes of action on the way to the victory.
Rachwalski tallied 16 points for Augustana and freshman Lani Kasten (Forreston HS, German Valley, Ill.) was also in double figures with 11 points. Kasten led the visitors with nine rebounds while Howard contributed six boards coming off the bench.
Brittany Bobruk led four Bluejays in double figures with 18 points. Kelsey Monroe tied Kasten with a game-high nine rebounds.
