2008-09 Season - Vikings fall 80-55 to Aurora in women's basketball

AURORA, Ill.
– The Augustana women’s basketball team struggled in the second half and dropped an 80-55 decision at Aurora on Wednesday, December 17 in Aurora, Illinois.  The Vikings are 1-7 overall.

Sophomore Jeanelle Strohmaier (Genoa-Kingston HS, Genoa, Ill.) and junior Kristen Fox (Ottawa HS, Ottawa, Ill.) were an effective one-two punch in the game’s early stages.  Fox buried a three point bucket in between jumpers by Strohmaier as the Vikings grabbed a 7-4 edge three minutes into play.

A 7-0 spurt by Aurora quickly turned things around and the Spartans maintained the advantage for the rest of the first half.  The Vikings moved within four points of the lead at 24-20 with 7:37 left in the opening session, but trailed 39-31 at intermission.

After the home team scored the first basket of the second half, Augustana rallied back with a three point field goal from senior Sarah Rachwalski (Amos Alonzo Stagg HS, Palos Hills, Ill.) and a jumper by freshman Natalie Runge (St. Dominic HS, O’Fallon, Mo.) to cut the deficit to 41-36 at the 18:43 mark.

That was as close as Augustana would come to the Spartans, as Aurora scored the next 10 points and gradually pulled away for the 80-55 victory.

Runge led the Vikings with 11 points and Fox was also in double figures with 10 points of her own.  Strohmaier (pictured above) added eight points and led the team with seven rebounds, as the Vikings finished with a 47-31 advantage on the glass.

Aurora was led by Kim Voiles, who finished with a game high 23 points.  Meagan Re scored 19 points and Jessica Mason was the third Spartan in double figures with 11 points.
