2008-2009 Season - Zac Holland takes sixth at Wartburg Invitational
WAVERLY, Iowa – Junior Zac Holland (West Des Moines Dowling HS, Pleasant Hill, Iowa) recorded the best individual place finish for the Augustana wrestling team at the Dick Walker Knights Invitational on Saturday, December 13. The 13 team invitational was held at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa and Holland placed sixth in the 149 pound weight class.
Number one ranked Wartburg won the meet with 153 points while Wisconsin-Whitewater was second with 127.5 and North Central took third with 103. Augustana placed 12th with 19.5 points.
Holland, who is now 11-9 on the season, wrestled a total of seven matches throughout the day. He lost his first match to number one seed Tanner Kampen of Iowa Central 19-10 before recovering to win four straight matches in the wrestle back round. He beat Dugan O’Connor of Knox 11-2 and then pinned Ian Mann of Wisconsin-Whitewater at 1:19. Holland picked up a medical forfeit over Matt Schuck of Wisconsin-Whitewater and beat seventh seeded Nathan DeVaux of North Central 8-2. In the consolation semi final he lost to fifth seeded Jacob Groth of Wartburg 13-2 and in the fifth place match Holland fell to third seeded Ryan Mulnix of Cornell 2-0.
Junior Kyle Brodwater (St. Joseph Hamm HS, Medford, New Jersey) was the number one seed at 125 pounds but he lost his first two matches and was eliminated. Sophomore Gabe Gardner (Air Academy, Colorado Springs, Colorado) advanced to the quarterfinal of the 174 pound weight class before losing. He opened up with a pin over Tyler Hancock of North Iowa College at 6:20 and followed that up with a pin of seventh seeded Samuel Bonsu of Iowa Central at 4:52. He dropped his quarterfinal match to Kyle Kehrli of Cornell 14-2 and then was pinned in the wrestle back by fourth seeded Carsten Carlsen of Wisconsin-Platteville at 2:15.
