2009-10 Season - Augustana women win home invitational in dominating fashion
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Augustana finished off its home swimming invitational with a dominating performance from the women’s squad and a strong second place finish by the men’s team on Saturday, December 6 in Rock Island, Illinois. The women won the eight team field with 601 points, well ahead of runner-up Loras (494). Coe (302), Hannibal-LaGrange (239), Robert Morris (230), Eureka (41), Illinois College (36), and Iowa Central CC (3) wrapped up the team scoring on the women’s side. The Viking men almost came away with a title, falling by two points to Iowa Central CC (593). Augustana was a solid second with 591 points, followed by Loras with 577 points. Hannibal-LaGrange (112), Coe (38), Eureka (27), and Illinois College (2) completed the scoring in the seven team men’s field.
MEN: Junior Eric Zike (Ridgeview HS, Colfax, Ill.) and freshman Denny Wind (Downers Grove North HS, Downers Grove, Ill.), and senior Danny Betz (DeKalb HS, DeKalb, Ill.) each earned third place individual finishes on the second day of competition. Zike finished the 100 backstroke in 1:01.82, Wind hit the finish with a time of 5:30.95 in the 400 individual medley, and Betz completed the 100 butterfly with a clocking of :57.53. Zike also swam the first leg with Betz taking the third leg on the third place 200 medley relay team. They were joined by freshman Michael Whittle (Galesburg HS, Galesburg, Ill.) and sophomore Drew Clinton (Riverside-Brookfield, Brookfield, Ill.) as the foursome combined for a time of 1:46.02.
Sophomore Brian Tuinenga (Glenbard South HS, Glen Ellyn, Ill.) took fourth in the 400 individual medley (5:50.30) and Whittle grabbed the fourth spot in the 200 breaststroke (2:38.11). Freshman Mark Hillstrom (Naperville Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) was fifth in the 200 freestyle (2:02.22) and senior Jason Perine (Plainfield South HS, Plainfield, Ill.) finished fifth in the 200 breaststroke (2:38.97). Clinton tied for fifth place in the 50 freestyle with a time of :24.28.
WOMEN: Freshman Jessica Fair (Ashton-Franklin Center HS, Franklin Grove, Ill.) won her second individual event in as many days, earning the crown in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:07.39. Junior Sara Hlavin (St. Viator HS, Elk Grove Village, Ill.) and sophomore Emily Cox (Pioneer HS, Ann Arbor, Mich.) also turned terrific individual performances for the women’s team. Hlavin was the runner-up in the 400 individual medley with a time of 5:10.13 and Cox placed second in the 200 freestyle, hitting the wall in 2:09.24. Hlavin, Fair, senior Megan Lonergan (Bettendorf HS, Bettendorf, Iowa), and Cox were also second in the 200 medley relay (2:04.95).
Fair finished fourth in the 50 freestyle with a time of :26.92. Junior Kaitlyn Babicz (Charlotte Catholic HS, Oconomowoc, Wis.) grabbed the fifth spot in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 3:06.36.
