Medical Service Learning in Nicaragua
JETS! (Joining in Education Through Service) will again travel during Spring Break and immediately after graduation in June.
During the two weeks in Nicaragua, students will assist medical personnel at free health clinics. During 2008 students saw over 1,000 patients ranging in age from infants to the elderly. They will be working with Global Medical Training (GMT), a group founded in 2001. Their main purpose is to offer healthcare students and professionals a truly international experience that will expand their understanding of medicine and life outside of the United States. GMT is prepared to set up temporary medical clinics to diagnose and provide medicines for basic, non-chronic illnesses. They refer patients to hospitals when a patient's condition is beyond the scope of what can be provided on-site. GMT purchases pharmaceuticals that are given out free to patients. Within the communities they work with, GMT promotes sustainable resolutions for communities across Central America and Mexico.
Students will be accompanied by Dr. Darrin Good, and Dr. Dara Wegman-Geedey, Department of Biology.
