2009 Season - 2008 MEN'S SOCCER REVIEW
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The Augustana men’s soccer team wrapped up the 2008 campaign with an overall record of 6-9-2. The Vikings were seventh in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin, finishing at 1-5-1. The team earned its conference win against North Central and also tied Elmhurst.
The Vikings opened the season by splitting a pair of games on the road against Rhodes and Millsaps. After falling 2-1 against Rhodes in the season opener, the team came right back with a 2-1 win of its own against Millsaps the following day. The team followed up with its first shutout and most lopsided victory of the year, cruising past MacMurray 5-0 to move to 2-1 overall. A 0-0 double overtime draw and a tough 2-1 loss to Central followed, but Augustana again responded with two straight victories, defeating Luther (1-0 2OT) and Iowa Wesleyan (4-0) to improve to 4-2-1 overall.
A mid-season skid left the team at 4-7-1 before Augustana grabbed its fourth shutout win of the season, defeating Beloit 4-0. The Vikings wrapped up the CCIW schedule with a 2-0 loss at Illinois Wesleyan, a 2-1 victory against North Central, and a 2-2 draw in double overtime against Elmhurst. The squad dropped a hard fought 3-2 decision to Loras to close out the campaign.
Junior midfielder Scott Wallner (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) and senior forward Dan Hogan (Wheaton North HS, Wheaton, Ill.) each scored five goals to lead the offense. Wallner and senior midfielder Matt Meyer (Schaumburg HS, Schaumburg, Ill.) tied for the team lead in points, each compiling 12 this season. Wallner had two assists along with his five goals while Meyer finished with four goals and a team high four assists. Hogan added one assist to his five goals, finishing with 11 points and ending the season as the third Viking in double figures in points. Wallner was also named as a first team selection to the CCIW All-Conference squad for his efforts.
Junior forward Dave Shrigley (Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) was fourth on the team with six points. He scored twice and was credited with a pair of assists. Sophomore midfielder Greg Maggio (Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) was right behind him, totaling five points on the season with two goals and an assist. Junior midfielder Alex Rathe (Lake Zurich HS, Deer Park, Ill.), junior midfielder Pheng Xiong (Sheboygan North HS, Sheboygan, Wis.), and junior midfielder John Linden (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) each finished with four points as all three players scored two goals during the season.
Freshman defender Sean Hamman (St. Francis Prep HS, Wheaton, Ill.) and freshman midfielder Marc Nethercote (Grayslake HS, Grayslake, Ill.) both tallied three points, scoring one goal and adding an assist. Senior defender Craig Bucy (Jacksonville HS, Jacksonville, Ill.) scored one goal to finish at two points. Junior defender Eric Love (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) also compiled two points on a pair of assists. Junior midfielder Andrew Stanley (Harlem HS, Roscoe, Ill.) and sophomore midfielder Alex Bennett (Lincoln Way East HS, Mokena, Ill.) both had one assist, totaling one point.
Senior Mike Dolan (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) played in all 17 games as a goalkeeper, making 62 saves and allowing 25 goals. He compiled a 5-8-2 mark and played a key role in all five shutouts this season. Sophomore Tom Marsden (Grayslake HS, Grayslake, Ill.) also saw time in net for the Vikings this season. He played in three games and made three saves, also helping in a pair of shutout victories. Marsden did not allow a goal in almost 103 minutes of action.
The Vikings held a 27-25 goal scoring edge against the opposition and outshot its foes by a 201-190 margin. Augustana attempted 69 corner kicks while opponents managed 89 attempts.
