2009-10 Season - Viking men's swim team finishes fourth at IWU Invite


BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – After competing in four straight dual meets, the Augustana swim teams once again traveled to Bloomington, Illinois for an invitational, this time competing at the IWU Invite on Saturday, November 22.  The women placed second out of eight teams with a score of 89 points.  The men were fourth out of seven squads with 55 points. 

Illinois Wesleyan won the women’s meet with 179 points.  The Vikings were followed by Millikin (61), Lincoln (53), Principia (43), Robert Morris (43), College of DuPage (32), and Eureka (5).  Lincoln took home top honors on the men’s side with 117 points.  The Titans finished second with 110 points and Millikin was third with 67 points.  Augustana finished the meet ahead of Principia (44), College of DuPage (27), and Eureka (10).

MEN: Senior Rob Emerson (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) picked up second place finishes in both diving events to lead the Vikings.  He scored 170 points in the three meter diving event and finished with 204.45 points in the one meter diving event. 

Junior Eric Zike (Ridgeview HS, Colfax, Ill.) also had a strong day in the pool, finishing fourth in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:01.31.  Zike also swam on two relay squads that earned fourth place finishes.  He performed the opening leg on the 200 medley relay, combining with senior Jason Perine (Plainfield South HS, Plainfield, Ill.), senior Danny Betz (DeKalb HS, DeKalb, Ill.), and sophomore Drew Clinton (Riverside-Brookfield HS, Brookfield, Ill.) for a clocking of 1:47.45.  Clinton, freshman Mark Hillstrom (Naperville Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.), Zike, and Betz finished the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:35.82.

WOMEN: Megan Lonergan picked up a victory in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5:24.91.  She was also third in the 200 individual medley (2:24.81) and the 100 butterfly (1:04.90).  Lonergan also anchored the 200 freestyle relay team to a second place showing.  She combined with freshman Jessica Fair (Ashton-Franklin Center HS, Franklin Grove, Ill.), sophomore Emily Cox (Pioneer HS, Ann Arbor, Mich.), and junior Sara Hlavin (St. Viator HS, Elk Grove Village, Ill.) for a time of 1:48.59. 

Fair and Cox added strong finishes for the Vikings.  Fair finished second in the 200 freestyle (2:06.45), third in the 50 freestyle (:26.27), and third in the 100 freestyle (:56.82).  Cox earned a runner-up finish in the 500 freestyle (5:43.47) and placed third in the 200 freestyle (2:07.29).  Hlavin took fifth in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:09.70.
