2009-10 Season - Augustana women's swim team falls 97-95 against Monmouth
MONMOUTH, Ill. – The Augustana men and women’s swimming team dropped a dual meet to Monmouth on Friday, November 21 in Monmouth, Illinois. The men fell 124-80 to fall to 3-2 in dual meets. The women lost for the first time this season, dropping a 97-95 decision, and are now 4-1 in dual meets.
MEN: The men’s team won three individual events and one relay race in the dual meet with the Fighting Scots. Sophomore Drew Clinton (Riverside-Brookfield HS, Brookfield, Ill.) was the winner in the 200 freestyle, hitting the finish with a time of 2:03.02. Junior Eric Zike (Ridgeview HS, Colfax, Ill.) raced to a victory in the 50 freestyle, edging out a pair of teammates to win with a clocking of :24.10. Michael Whittle and senior Jason Perine (Plainfield South HS, Plainfield, Ill.) tied for the top spot in the 100 breaststroke. Both swimmers completed the event with an identical time of 1:08.34. Senior Danny Betz (DeKalb HS, DeKalb, Ill.) swam the opening leg of the first place 200 freestyle relay. He combined with Perine, Zike, and Clinton to finish with a winning time of 1:38.63.
Augustana’s strongest event was the 50 freestyle, where freshman Mark Hillstrom (Naperville Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) and Perine joined Zike for a 1-2-3 Viking finish. Hillstrom took runner-up honors with a time of :24.44 and Perine was third, coming in at :24.53.
Senior Ian Gustafson (Rockford Jefferson HS, Cherry Valley, Ill.), Whittle, freshman Kevin Cialdella (Lincoln-Way East HS, Tinley Park, Ill.), and sophomore Brian Tuinenga (Glenbard South HS, Glen Ellyn, Ill.) took second place in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:59.50. Zike was second in the 100 backstroke (1:00.60). Betz finished second in the 100 butterfly (:59.11) and third in the 200 individual medley (2:14.29).
WOMEN: Freshman Jessica Fair (Ashton-Franklin Center HS, Franklin Grove, Ill.) and Megan Lonergan each won a pair of individual crowns and also combined with freshman Alissa Geidd (Freeport HS, Cedarville, Ill.) and sophomore Emily Cox (Pioneer HS, Ann Arbor, Mich.) for a victory in the 200 freestyle relay (1:47.83). Fair earned top finishes in the 50 freestyle (:26.19) and the 100 freestyle (:56.95). Lonergan grabbed titles in the 1000 freestyle (11:01.02) and the 100 butterfly (1:04.80).
Geidd and Cox each had a pair of runner-up performances at the meet. Geidd was second in the 200 freestyle (2:12.95) and the 500 freestyle (6:04.46). Cox placed second in the 50 freestyle (:27.66) and the 100 freestyle (:58.96) to give the Vikings a 1-2 finish in both events. Junior Sara Hlavin (St. Viator HS, Elk Grove Village, Ill.), senior Mary Galloway (Schaumburg HS, Schaumburg, Ill.), junior Emma Moran (Bettendorf HS, Bettendorf, Iowa), and Geidd took second place in the 200 medley relay with a clocking of 2:11.97.
Hlavin was third in the 100 butterfly (1:07.46) and the 100 breaststroke (1:17.14). Freshman Colleen Mans (Robbinsdale Cooper HS, New Hope, Minn.) also had a pair of third place finishes. She completed the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:39.65 and finished the 100 backstroke in 1:11.51.
