2008-2009 Season - Gogonas and Kerr claim individual weight classes at Knox Invitational
GALESBURG, Illinois – Senior Brian Kerr (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) and junior George Gogonas (Bowie SH, Austin, Texas) each won individual titles at the Knox Invitational on Saturday, November 15 in Galesburg, Illinois as Augustana opened the 2008-09 wrestling season. There were no team scores in the meet, which featured 14 teams.
Kerr won the 184 pound weight class with a 3-0 record. He defeated Nate Fell of Central of Iowa 13-6 to start things off and then beat Sam England of Wisconsin-Oshkosh 7-4 in the semi-finals. In the championship match Kerr beat Brad Zellner of Wisconsin-Platteville 4-1.
Gogonas went 4-0 to capture the 125 pound weight class. He actually defeated his junior teammate Kyle Brodwater (St. Joseph Ham HS, Medford, New Jersey) 2-1 in the championship bout. Gogonas beat Travis Evans of Grand View 8-4 in the first round and then took care of Sean Weber 6-3 in the quarterfinals. He defeated Dominic Deligio of Milwaukee School of Engineering 5-4 in the semi-finals.
Brodwater was 4-1 in placing second at 125 pounds. Before he lost to Gogonas in the championship, he won four straight matches. He defeated Jeff Ohnemus of Waldorf 6-3 in the first round and followed that with a 6-1 win over Kurt Kemnitz of Concordia-Wisconsin. He beat Sammy Deligio of Milwaukee School of Engineering in the quarterfinals and handled Chad Leviner of Wisconsin-Oshkosh 3-1 in the semi-finals.
Sophomore Max Gailey (Lake Forest HS, Lake Bluff, Ill.) placed third at 133 pounds with a 4-1 record. He beat Charley Deutsch of Knox 4-0 to start the tournament. He won a narrow 10-9 decision over Chris Spaude of Wisconsin-Platteville and then lost to Eric Ellington of Rend Lake 11-5 in the semi-finals. In the wrestle back round he advanced past Dan Crowley of Concordia-Wisconsin on a medical default and then beat Curran Allenstein of Illinois State by a score of 9-4.
UP NEXT: Augustana will travel to Mequon, Wisconsin on Saturday, November 22 for the Concordia Open.
