GRINNELL, Iowa
– Junior Kristen Fox (Ottawa HS, Ottawa, Ill.) poured in a game high 23 points for the Vikings and helped the Augustana women’s basketball team to a 66-48 victory over Martin Luther in the Grinnell Tournament on Sunday, November 16 in Grinnell, Iowa.  Fox was named to the all-tournament team for her efforts over the weekend.  Augustana improves to 1-1 overall with the win.

The Vikings jumped out to an early lead behind a stout defense and a three point play by Fox put Augustana in front 16-5 at the 11:24 mark of the opening half.  Martin Luther responded with a run of its own to close the gap to 16-14 before the Vikings came back strong.  A 17-0 spurt by Augustana put the Vikings in control with a 33-14 advantage at the 3:51 mark.  Martin Luther closed the half on a 10-2 run, but the Vikings led 35-24 heading into intermission.

Martin Luther fought within 37-30 early in the second stanza, but a three point basket by senior Sarah Rachwalski (Amos Alonzo Stagg HS, Palos Hills, Ill.) put Augustana in front by double digits to stay for the rest of the contest.  The Vikings led by 20 on three separate occasions and held a 64-42 lead with 2:10 remaining on its way to the win.

Sophomore Jeanelle Strohmaier (Genoa-Kingston HS, Genoa, Ill.) finished in double digits for the second straight game, ending the contest with 15 points.  Freshman Kristina Howard (Cherokee Trail HS, Aurora, Colo.) came off the bench to snare a game high 10 rebounds in 18 minutes of action.

The Vikings shot 42.6 percent (26-61) from the field, including 62.5 percent (5-8) from beyond the three point arc.  The Augustana defense limited Martin Luther to 23.5 percent (16-68) shooting for the contest.  The Vikings also dominated the boards, outrebounding Martin Luther 61-39 with a 46-24 advantage on the defensive glass.
