2009-10 Season - Augustana men's swimming team improves to 3-1 overall with victory against North Central


ROCK ISLAND, Ill.
– The Augustana women’s swimming team remained undefeated in dual meets while the men won for the third time this season on Saturday, November 15 against North Central in Rock Island, Illinois.  The women were 403-119 winners while the men won 570-276.  The women improve to 4-0 in dual meets while the men move to 3-1.

MEN: Senior Danny Betz (DeKalb HS, DeKalb, Ill.) and junior Eric Zike (Ridgeview HS, Colfax, Ill.) each won an individual title for the Vikings.  Betz grabbed top honors in the 100 butterfly (:58.23) and Zike was victorious in the 100 backstroke (1:02.16).  The Viking tandem also combined with freshman Mark Hillstrom (Naperville Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) and sophomore Drew Clinton (Riverside-Brookfield HS, Brookfield, Ill.) for a win in the 200 freestyle relay (1:36.87).

Augustana continued its dominance with several runner-up finishes.  Sophomore Derek Sanderson (Lincoln Way East HS, Tinley Park, Ill.) placed second in the 1000 freestyle (12:10.00) and the 500 freestyle (5:48.77).  Hillstrom also had a pair of second place showings, earning the runner-up spot in the 200 freestyle (2:03.13) and the 100 freestyle (:56.72).  Betz took second in the 50 freestyle (:24.14) and Zike placed second in the 200 individual medley (2:31.52).  Freshman Denny Wind (Downers Grove North HS, Downers Grove, Ill.), senior Jason Perine (Plainfield South HS, Plainfield, Ill.), freshman Kevin Cialdella (Lincoln Way East HS, Tinley Park, Ill.), and freshman Robert Flynn (Bartlett HS, Bartlett, Ill.) were second in the 200 medley relay (2:00.13).

Wind was third in the 200 freestyle (2:05.95), Zike finished third in the 50 freestyle (:24.36), and senior Ian Gustafson (Rockford Jefferson HS, Cherry Valley, Ill.) grabbed the third slot in the 200 individual medley (2:34.25).  Perine placed third in the 100 freestyle (:56.79), junior Jake Glimco (Naperville Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) was third in the 500 freestyle (5:52.03), and sophomore Brian Tuinenga (Glenbard South HS, Glen Ellyn, Ill.) finished third in the 100 breaststroke (1:25.43).

WOMEN: The Vikings won seven individual titles and also grabbed a relay victory.  Junior Sara Hlavin (St. Viator HS, Elk Grove Village, Ill.) earned crowns in the 200 individual medley (2:28.98) and the 500 freestyle (5:43.46).  Freshman Jessica Fair (Ashton-Franklin Center HS, Franklin Grove, Ill.) posted wins in the 50 freestyle (:26.53) and the 100 freestyle (:57.22).  Freshman Alissa Geidd (Freeport HS, Cedarville, Ill.) was first in the 1000 freestyle (12:06.66), sophomore Emily Cox (Pioneer HS, Ann Arbor, Mich.) took the top spot in the 200 freestyle (2:04.31), and junior Emma Moran (Bettendorf HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) won the 100 butterfly (1:13.58).  Cox, freshman Colleen Mans (Robbinsdale Cooper HS, New Hope, Minn.), Hlavin, and Fair finished first in the 200 freestyle relay (1:52.99).

Mans and sophomore Courtney Carlisle (Prospect HS, Mount Prospect, Ill.) each had two runner-up finishes for Augustana.  Mans placed second in the 200 freestyle (2:13.84) and the 100 backstroke (1:13.27).  Carlisle took second in the 200 individual medley (2:59.13) and the 100 butterfly (1:35.76).  Cox grabbed the second position in the 100 freestyle (1:00.33), Geidd was second in the 500 freestyle (6:13.74), and freshman Samantha Hoffman (Belvidere HS, Belvidere, Ill.) earned the runner-up spot in the 100 breaststroke (1:25.19).

Moran finished third in the 50 freestyle with a clocking of :30.45.  Senior Mary Galloway (Schaumburg HS, Schaumburg, Ill.) was third in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:28.28.
