2009-10 Season - Augustana women's swimmers race past Knox and Iowa Central CC to remain unbeaten in dual meets
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The Augustana swimming teams competed for the first time this season at home, facing Iowa Central CC and Knox on Saturday, November 8 in Rock Island, Illinois. The Vikings continued a successful weekend, winning three of the four duals meets on the day. The women defeated Iowa Central CC 139-16 and also beat Knox 110-75. The men pulled out a 91-90 decision against Knox, but fell 127-63 to Iowa Central CC.
MEN: Four different Vikings earned runner-up finishes to pace the men’s squad. Sophomore Derek Sanderson (Lincoln Way East HS, Tinley Park, Ill.) was second in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 11:56.34 and senior Danny Betz (DeKalb HS, DeKalb, Ill.) took the runner-up spot in the 100 butterfly with a clocking of :58.03. Sophomore Drew Clinton (Riverside-Brookfield HS, Brookfield, Ill.) earned the second spot in the 100 freestyle (:54.35) and junior Eric Zike (Ridgeview HS, Colfax, Ill.) grabbed second place in the 100 backstroke (1:03.16).
Betz and Sanderson each added a third place individual finish on the day, and Augustana also added several fourth place finishes. Betz placed third in the 50 freestyle (:24.12) while Sanderson was third in the 500 freestyle (5:46.43). Freshman Denny Wind (Downers Grove North HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) took fourth in the 200 freestyle (2:08.94), and freshman Mark Hillstrom (Naperville Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) placed fourth in the 100 freestyle (:55.08). Senior Jason Perine (Plainfield South HS, Plainfield, Ill.) was fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.89), and junior Jake Glimco (Naperville Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) brought home a pair of fourth place finish in the 500 freestyle (6:11.50).
Zike, senior Ian Gustafson (Rockford Jefferson HS, Cherry Valley, Ill.), freshman Kevin Cialdella (Lincoln Way East HS, Tinley Park, Ill.), and sophomore Brian Tuinenga (Glenbard South HS, Glen Ellyn, Ill.) each turned in a fifth place performance. Zike took fifth in the 50 freestyle (:25.76), Gustafson was fifth in the 200 individual medley (2:33.75), Cialdella finished in the fifth slot in the 100 butterfly (1:09.90), and Tuinenga grabbed the fifth position in the 100 backstroke (1:15.68).
WOMEN: Freshman Jessica Fair (Ashton-Franklin Center HS, Franklin Grove, Ill.) continued to have a strong start to the season by grabbing two more individual titles on Saturday and also swimming on a winning relay team. She won the 50 freestyle (:26.50) and the 100 freestyle (:57.22). Fair also swam the second leg on the first place 200 freestyle relay. She combined with sophomore Emily Cox (Pioneer HS, Ann Arbor, Mich.), junior Kaitlyn Babicz (Charlotte Catholic HS, Oconomowoc, Wis.), and freshman Halle Monteith (Naperville Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) to finish the event with a time of 1:54.69.
Junior Sara Hlavin (St. Viator HS, Elk Grove Village, Ill.) won the 200 individual medley (2:25.17) and the 500 freestyle (5:57.19). Freshman Colleen Mans (Robbinsdale Cooper HS, New Hope, Minn.) finished first in the 1000 freestyle (12:46.69) and Cox grabbed the top spot in the 200 freestyle (2:09.00).
Freshman Alissa Geidd (Freeport HS, Cedarville, Ill.) earned a pair of second place finishes, taking the runner-up spot in the 50 freestyle (:27.56) and the 100 freestyle (:59.75). Cox completed a 1-2-3 finish for the Vikings in the 100 freestyle, taking third with a time of 1:00.52. Junior Emma Moran (Bettendorf HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) was third in the 100 butterfly (1:13.57), Mans finished third in the 100 backstroke (1:13.18), and freshman Samantha Hoffman (Belvidere HS, Belvidere, Ill.) took third in the 100 breaststroke (1:22.94).
Babicz was fourth in the 50 freestyle (:29.70) and freshman Ashley Sudaj (LaSalle-Peru HS, Peru, Ill.) took the fourth slot in the 100 breaststroke (1:28.72). Hoffman placed fifth in the 50 freestyle (:30.53), Monteith earned the fifth position in the 100 freestyle (1:08.70), Sudaj was fifth in the 100 backstroke (1:19.50), and senior Laura Anderson (Redwood Valley HS, Redwood Falls, Minn.) finished fifth in the 100 breaststroke (1:31.01).
