2009-10 Season - Eight individual titles lead Viking swimmers to victory over Coe
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Augustana swimming teams performed well in the first dual meet of the season, each earning a victory against Coe on Friday, November 7 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The men cruised to a 152-30 win while the women pulled out a 115-106 decision. The men’s team won eight individual events while the women earned six titles in individual races.
MEN: Junior Eric Zike (Ridgeview HS, Colfax, Ill.) won two individual titles, finishing first in the 200 individual medley (2:21.87) and the 100 backstroke (1:02.77). He also swam the opening leg on the winning 200 medley relay squad, teaming with sophomore Drew Clinton (Riverside-Brookfield HS, Brookfield, Ill.), freshman Denny Wind (Downers Grove North HS, Downers Grove, Ill.), and freshman Mark Hillstrom (Naperville Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) for the victory in a time of 1:54.05.
Six other Vikings won individual events and Augustana won another relay, leading the team to a lopsided victory. Sophomore Derek Sanderson (Lincoln Way East HS, Tinley Park, Ill.) was the top finisher in the 1000 freestyle (11:52.72) and Clinton was victorious in the 50 freestyle (:24.15). Senior Rob Emerson (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) earned first place points with a score of 220.20 points in the one meter diving event, and senior Danny Betz (DeKalb HS, DeKalb, Ill.) grabbed top honors in the 100 butterfly (:58.84). Hillstrom won the 100 freestyle (:53.86) and senior Ian Gustafson (Rockford Jefferson HS, Cherry Valley, Ill.) edged out a victory in the 100 breaststroke (1:23.29). Betz, junior Jake Glimco (Naperville Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.), Wind, and Hillstrom finished the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:41.70.
The men also earned seven runner-up finishes in individual events at the dual meet. Wind was second in the 200 freestyle (2:06.16), Betz placed second in the 50 freestyle (:24.26), and Glimco finished second in the 200 individual medley (2:37.02). Freshman Kevin Cialdella (Lincoln Way East HS, Tinley Park, Ill.) took the runner-up spot in the 100 butterfly (1:08.71) and Clinton placed second in the 100 freestyle (:53.93). Sanderson swam a time of 5:49.05 in the 500 freestyle and sophomore Brian Tuinenga finished the 100 breaststroke with a clocking of 1:23.75, both finishing in second place.
WOMEN: Junior Sara Hlavin (St. Viator HS, Elk Grove Village, Ill.) and freshman Jessica Fair (Ashton-Franklin Center HS, Franklin Grove, Ill.) each won two individual races, helping earn the team victory for the Vikings. Hlavin won the 200 individual medley (2:24.87) and the 500 freestyle (5:41.11). Fair grabbed titles in the 50 freestyle (:26.65) and the 100 freestyle (:57.12). Sophomore Courtney Carlisle (Prospect HS, Mount Prospect, Ill.) and sophomore Emily Cox (Pioneer HS, Ann Arbor, Mich.) also won individual races for Augustana. Carlisle was the top finisher in the 1000 freestyle (12:20.26) while Cox won the 200 freestyle (2:07.00).
The women also won a relay title, finishing first in the 200 freestyle relay. Hlavin, Cox, Fair, and freshman Colleen Mans (Robbinsdale Cooper HS, New Hope, Minn.) combined for a winning time of 1:51.63.
Freshman Alissa Geidd (Freeport HS, Cedarville, Ill.), Cox,Mans, and junior Kaitlyn Babicz (Charlotte Catholic HS, Oconomowoc, Wis.) all had second place finishes. Giedd was the runner-up in the 100 butterfly (1:12.73) and Cox placed second in the 100 freestyle (:58.69). Mans was second in the 100 backstroke (1:12.05) and Babicz grabbed the runner-up spot in the 100 breaststroke (1:22.96).
The foursome of freshman Ashley Sudaj (LaSalle-Peru HS, Peru, Ill.), senior Laura Anderson (Redwood Valley HS, Redwood Falls, Minn.), junior Emma Moran (Bettendorf HS, Bettendorf, Iowa), and Babicz combined for a second place finish in the 200 medley relay. They finished with a time of 2:17.34.
