2009-10 Season - Emily Cox is a double winner for Viking swimmers at Halloween Invite

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – Sophomore Emily Cox (Pioneer HS, Ann Arbor, Mich.) won an individual title for Augustana at the Illinois Wesleyan Halloween Invitational to open the season.  Cox also teamed with freshman Jessica Fair (Ashton-Franklin Center HS, Franklin Grove, Ill.), junior Sara Hlavin (St. Viator HS, Elk Grove Village, Ill.), and freshman Alissa Giedd (Freeport HS, Cedarville, Ill.) a victory in the 500 freestyle relay. 

The women’s team was third out of four teams with 42 points.  Illinois Wesleyan won with 88 points, Millikin was second with 53 points, and North Central placed fourth with 30 points.  The Viking men were fourth with 30 points, finishing behind Illinois Wesleyan (91 points), Millikin (64 points), and North Central (32 points).


MEN:  Sophomore Derek Sanderson (Lincoln Way East HS, Tinley Park, Ill.) also had a strong day in the pool, placing third in the 500 freestyle (5:51.82) and fourth in the 200 freestyle (2:09.64).  Senior Danny Betz (DeKalb HS, DeKalb, Ill.) placed fourth in the 100 freestyle with a time of :54.39.

The Vikings also had a pair of third place finishes in the relay events.  Freshman Mark Hillstrom (Naperville Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.), sophomore Brian Tuinenga (Glenbard South HS, Glen Ellyn, Ill.), and junior Eric Zike (Ridgeview HS, Colfax, Ill.) combined for a time of 3:19.18 in the 300 backstroke relay.   Junior Jake Glimco (Naperville Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.), Betz, Hillstrom, and sophomore Drew Clinton (Riverside-Brookfield HS, Brookfield, Ill.) completed the 200 freestyle relay in 1:38.41.

WOMEN: Cox was a double winner, earning an individual crown in the 100 freestyle (:58.83) and grabbing a win in the 500 freestyle relay along with Fair, Hlavin, and Giedd.  The group hit the finish line with a time of 5:08.95.  Augustana showed off its depth in the 200 freestyle where Hlavin finished second (2:09.50), Cox took third (2:10.68), and Giedd placed fourth (2:15.71).  Freshman Colleen Mans (Robbinsdale Cooper HS, New Hope, Minn.) was third in the 200 backstroke (2:35.81) and Giedd grabbed the fourth spot in the 500 freestyle (6:15.93).

Augustana also picked up a third place showing in the 200 freestyle relay where Cox, Fair, Mans, and junior Emma Moran (Bettendorf HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) finished with a clocking of 1:55.17.
