Faculty News

Allison Beck went to the annual conference for the Society of Vertebrate Paleontology last week in Cleveland, and gave a talk titled Trends in Body Size Evolution of the Non-Mammalian Synapsids, coauthored with Karen Sears of the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. She then coauthored a talk by Dr. Sears called Decoupled Trends in the Evolution of Upright Stance in Non-Mammalian Synapsids. Basically, they both talked about trends in the skeletal evolution of the ancestors of mammals, which are called mammal-like reptiles or non-mammalian synapsids. They will submit their papers for publication to the journal Paleobiology.

Jon Hurty presented a choral reading workshop on anthems for church choirs at the American Choral directors Association Fall Convention on Saturday, October 18th in DeKalb.

Jason Koontz was invited to speak at the 32nd Annual Southern California Botanists Symposium on October 28th at California State University in Fullerton. The symposium theme was "Problem Plant Groups: Difficult to Understand and Identify." Jason's talk, "Delphinium ID: Why a good key is hard to find," focused on why larkspurs are hard to identify and how he hopes to improve the identification key in the upcoming second edition of The Jepson Manual (the flora of California for which Jason is authoring the revision of Delphinium and Consolida).
