An article Bill Hammer co-authored with Chris Sidor of the University of Washington and Ross Damiani of the Stuttgart Museum of Natural History titled: A New Triassic Temnspondyl from Antarctica and a Review of Fremouw Formation Biostratigraphy was just published in the September 2008 issue of the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology, v. 28(3), p. 656-663.
Carrie Hough participated in a multidisciplinary and international workshop on Loss in Childbearing in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia in Edinburgh, Scotland during the first week of September. The workshop assembled anthropologists, sociologists, health economists and representatives from advocacy groups to discuss their research on infertility, child and maternal mortality, and abortion, and address policy applications for their work. Carrie's paper, Kanyalengs, Contraception and Contested Reproduction: Taking Women's Reproductive Health Goals into Account to Prevent STIs and Preserve Fertility in The Gambia, was based on her dissertation fieldwork in Gambia, West Africa.
Peter Kivisto has coauthored a book chapter with Mika Roinila titled "Reaction to Departure: The Finnish American Community Reacts to 'Karelian Fever'." It appears in North American Finns in Soviet Karelia in the 1930s, edited by Irina Takala and Ilya Solomeshch (Petrozavodsk, Russia: Petrozavodsk State University Press, 2008, pp. 17-38).
On September 2, Peter Kivisto presented a talk at the Institute for Social Research in Oslo, Norway on his recent book, Citizenship: Discourse, Theory, and Transnational Prospects. On September 3 and 4 he was the keynote speaker at the annual conference of KIFO, an organization funded by the State Church of Norway to conduct research on religion. His two addresses were titled "Immigration, Religion, and Multiculturalism" and "Religion in the Civil Sphere." The conference was held on the campus of the University of Agder in Kristiansand.
Part of Joseph Leman's thesis work has been accepted for publication and is in press in the Journal of Evolutionary Biology. The title of the paper is "Lovesick: Immunological Costs of Reproduction to Male Sagebrush Crickets". His abstract can be read here.
Larry Peterson, Director of Music, Campus Ministries, was worship leader and presenter at the Northern Illinois Synod Professional Leaders Conference, September 22-24. He planned and lead worship each day and made one presentation entitled "Worship Planning-No Pain, No Gain". The annual conference is held for all of the rostered leaders (pastors, deacons, associates in ministry) of the Northern Illinois Synod of the ELCA.
Art Pitz presented on "Community Partnerships, Service Learning, and Teaching History" at the Innovative Partnerships for Student Learning conference held September 25-27, 2008. His presentation, to a nearly packed room on Thursday, included examples from service learning activities that he has carried out with students at Augustana over the past few years.
Megan Quinn has been chosen to receive the Lloyd Schoeneman Community Impact Award for Arts Educator. The award will be presented at the Quad City Arts' annual meeting on Thursday, October 16, 2008 at the Figge Art Museum. Contratulations, Megan!
