2008-09 Season - Viking women's tennis team falls 8-1 to Cornell and Grinnell
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – The Augustana women’s tennis team faced off against a pair of Iowa’s strongest teams on Saturday, September 27, falling 8-1 to both Cornell and Grinnell. Both teams are 10-2 after defeating the Vikings. Augustana won one of the doubles matches in each meet, but was not able to earn a singles win on the day. The Vikings drop to 5-7 overall and remain 2-2 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin.
In the opening match against the Rams, Augustana picked up a victory at number two doubles where junior Jenna Richardson (Melrose Park Walther Lutheran HS, Bellwood, Ill.) and senior Alli Bernardi (Rockford Lutheran HS, Belvidere, Ill.) defeated Caryl Abeyta and Kendall Bielinski (9-7).
Trailing 2-1, Augustana put together close sets in three of the singles matches, but could not grab another win. Junior Emily Doemland (Downers Grove South HS, Westmont, Ill.) fell (6-4, 6-3) to Kirsten Lasley at number three singles, sophomore Tricia Sapio (Barrington HS, Hoffman Estates, Ill.) dropped a (6-3, 6-4) decision to Bielinski at fourth singles, and freshman Brittany Reece (Naperville Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) lost (6-4, 7-5) to Annabelle Milliken in the fifth spot.
The Vikings turned around to face Grinnell in the afternoon and put together a very strong showing in the three doubles matches. Reece and sophomore Justine Stukas (Downers Grove North HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) were (9-7) winners over Jill Akiyama and Kelsey Picken at third doubles to put Augustana on the board. After Richardson and Bernardi fell (8-4) to Katie Colver and Maya Lipert at number two doubles, the attention turned to the top doubles matches where all four players battled until the final few points before Grinnell’s Toby Cain and Tatyana Sukharnikova pulled out a (9-8 (6)) win over Doemland and Sapio.
Bernardi had the closest match in singles, falling (7-5, 6-1) to Akiyama in the second spot.
The Vikings will be back in action next weekend with three more home meets. Augustana hosts Carthage on Friday, October 3 and will face Elmhurst and Loras on Saturday, October 4.
