2008-2009 Season - 2001 Men's Golf Review
Scott Peterson named Most Valuable Player for Vikings Golf Team
Junior Scott Peterson (Galesburg HS, Galesburg, IL) sat out his sophomore golf season at Augustana College due to an illness. He obviously had no trouble making up for lost time this spring as he was selected as the Vikings Most Valuable Player in a vote of his teammates. Peterson played in all 15 rounds of golf for head coach Grey Giovanine's club and averaged 77.3 strokes per round with a best score of 72, which he recorded on the second day of the Buena Vista Classic.
Peterson was seventh in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin championship on April 28 with a score of 154, fourth at the Big Blue Classic on April 21 with a score of 150 and third in the Rose Hulman Invitational on April 2 with a two round total of 159.
Junior Brian Sayers (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, IL) was named the Most Improved Player after he averaged 78.5 through 15 rounds of golf with a best score of 73.
Senior Phil Elston (Mendota HS, Mendota, IL) was picked as the Newcomer of the Year. After playing tennis for his first three years at Augustana, Elston switched to golf this spring and averaged 82.3 in three varsity rounds.
Peterson actually led a very balanced Viking team that enjoyed incredible success this past season. Giovanine's club played in seven invitationals and won three of those: Prairie Fire Invitational in Galesburg, Illinois on March 23-24, Rose Hulman Invitational in Terre Haute, Indiana on April 1-2 and the Big Blue Classic in Decatur, Illinois on April 20-21. Augustana finished second in the Buena Vista Classic in Spencer, Iowa on April 13-14, fourth in the Knox Invitational in Galesburg, Illinois on April 5 and fifth in the Augustana Invitational in Rock Island, Illinois on April 6-7.
The Vikings were also second in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Tournament, shooting a two-day total of 616 and falling to the red-hot Titans of Illinois Wesleyan who shot 593.
Throughout the entire year, different players stepped up to contribute to the success of the team. In the very first meet of the year it was junior Brian Torrence (Geneva HS, Geneva, IL) who led the way with a two day score of 149 to win individual medalist honors at the Prairie Fire Invitational. John Watson (Bureau Valley HS, Walnut, IL) finished in fourth place with a score of 155. In the Rose Hulman Invitational one week later, Peterson was third with a two day score of 159. In the Knox Invitational it was Sayers who stepped up, placing third with a round of 73. Chad Johansen's (Lisle Township HS, Lisle, IL) took his turn at the Buena Vista Classic when he carded a tremendous two day total of 147, with rounds of 74 & 73, that placed him fifth individually.
Four Vikings finished in the top 10 at the Big Blue Classic with Sayers placing third with a score of 149 and Peterson taking fourth at 150. Johansen was sixth with a score of 152 and Watson finished 10th with a two day total of 154. Sayers finished third in the CCIW tournament with a score of 149 while Peterson was seventh with a 154 and Johansen was ninth at 155.
