2008-2009 Season - 2000 MEN'S GOLF REVIEW
CHAD JOHANSEN NAMED PLAYER OF THE YEAR FOR AUGUSTANA VIKINGSAfter winning the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin title a year ago and qualifying for the NCAA Division III national tournament, the sights were set high for Augustana Vikings golf team in 2000. First year head coach Grey Giovanine inherited a team which was ranked 15h in the pre-season poll back in September.
With expectations so high, the fact that the Vikings finished second in the CCIW and failed to qualify for a second straight national trip may make some think the season wasn't a success. Nothing could be farther from the truth as Augustana put together another in a long line of successful golf campaigns.
The Vikings were solid the entire year, starting with a second place finish in the Prairie Fire Invitational at Soangetaha Golf Course in Galesburg on March 26-27. Hard on the heels of that was a third place finish against a quality field in the Central of Iowa Spring Classic on March 30. Then came a championship performance at the Knox Invitational, back at Soangetaha on April 6 when Brian Torrence (Geneva HS, Geneva, IL) won individual medallist honors with a 72.
After the Augustana Invitational was wiped out by a snowstorm on April 8-9, the Vikings defeated Knox in a dual meet on April 10 at Highland Springs Golf Course. At the Titan Classic at Ironwood Golf Course in Bloomington, Illinois on April 14-15 the Vikings were third with a two day score of 606. That was followed with a solid fourth place finish at the Millikin Intercollegiate Invitational on April 20-21 with a score of 677.
Then came the CCIW championships and the Vikings placed four players in the top 10 but still came up just two strokes shy of defending their league title. Millikin won the CCIW with a score of 612 while Augustana tied with Wheaton for second with a two-day total of 614. Individually, Chad Johansen (Lisle Township HS, Lisle, IL) was fourth with a 152. Jon Turner (R.O.W.V.A. HS, Oneida, IL) took seventh with a 154, Torrence was eighth at 155 and Brian Sayers (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, IL) was 10th with a 157.
The season ended on May 5 with a second place finish in the Quad City Intercollegiate meet at Highland Springs with a best round of the year score of 302.
Johansen was selected as the "Player of the Year" for the Vikings with his average of 78.2 over 13 rounds of golf. Freshman Mark Meyer (Glenbard East HS, Lombard, IL) was picked as the "Freshman of the Year".
