2008-2009 Season - Viking golfers place 7th out of 13 teams at Monmouth Invite; Rachel Gahn ties for 16th place in 88 player field
Monmouth, Iowa – The Augustana women’s golf team was back in action on Saturday, September 6, competing at the 13 team Monmouth Invitational at Gibson Woods Golf Course in Monmouth, Illinois. The Vikings finished with a team score of 361 and placed seventh at the meet.
Senior Rachel Gahn (Edina HS, Edina, Minn.) fired the team’s best score for the third straight meet, completing her round with a total of 88, good enough to tie for 16th place in the 88 player field. She was followed closely by freshman Alexa Fontana (Freeport Aquin HS, Freeport, Ill.), who shot an 89 and grabbed 22nd place.
Sophomore Jessica Berens (Schaumburg HS, Schaumburg, Ill.) was third for Augustana, tying for 26th place with a round of 93. Freshman Brittany Carr (Lincoln Way East HS, Frankfort, Ill.) rounded out the team total with a score of 93. Junior Katherine Mascheri (Hersey HS, Mount Prospect, Ill.) also competed for the Vikings and finished in 66th place with a score of 103.
North Central grabbed the team title with a score of 335. Wheaton was second with a total of 346 with Millikin placing third just two strokes behind at 348. Illinois College and Maryville tied for fourth place, each finishing with a team total of 352. Carthage was sixth with a 353. Monmouth (375), Clarke (384), Grinnell (385), Elmhurst (386), Knox (410), and North Park (436) rounded out the playing field.
Maryville’s Kayla Eckelkamp defeated North Central’s Mallory Carr in a playoff to win medalist honors with a round of 77.
Augustana’s next outing will be at the North Central Invitational on Tuesday, September 9 at the Cross Creek Country Club in Naperville, Illinois.
