2008-09 Season - Augustana women's tennis earns split of opening matches with 5-4 win over Monmouth and 7-2 loss against Quincy; Tricia Sapio earns clinching win for Vikings in first match

MONMOUTH, Ill. – Junior Jenna Richardson (Melrose Park Walther Lutheran HS, Bellwood, Ill.) and sophomore Tricia Sapio (Barrington HS, Hoffman Estates, Ill.) each rallied from a one set deficit and won in three sets as Augustan scored a 5-4 season opening victory against Monmouth in Monmouth, Illinois.  Richardson’s win tied the match at 4-4 before Sapio clinched the team victory.  The Vikings later fell 7-2 to Quincy, losing a trio of matches that ended in tie-breakers, to finish the day with a 1-1 overall record.

The Vikings fell behind 2-1 after the doubles matches against Monmouth, but scored a victory at third doubles where Richardson and junior Rose Szczurek (Lemont HS, Lemont, Ill.) cruised past Maddie Ethington and Sarah McLinden for an (8-1) win.

Freshman Brittany Reece (Naperville Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) put together an impressive showing in her collegiate debut, defeating Kayla Seyller (6-2, 6-0) to even the match at 2-2.  Szczurek put Augustana ahead with a (6-0, 6-1) win against Ethington at fifth singles, but the Vikings faced an uphill challenge, losing the first set in the top four singles matches.

With the Vikings trailing 4-3 after the Fighting Scots earned wins at second and third singles, Richardson came through with a (3-6, 6-4, (10-7)) victory against Cassie Frantz at number one singles to even the match at 4-4.  With the result hanging in the balance, Sapio hung tough after losing a close first set and earned a (6-7 (5), 6-3, (10-7)) win over Brittany Donnelly at fourth singles to clinch the match.

Augustana followed with a match against Quincy and again fell behind after the doubles matches, losing all three to the Hawks.  Junior Emily Doemland (Downers Grove South HS, Westmont, Ill.) and Sapio played a great match at number one doubles before falling (9-8 (3)) to Anele Novak and Lauren Henry.  Senior Alli Bernardi (Rockford Lutheran HS, Belvidere, Ill.) and Reece also lost a close decision, falling (8-6) to Megan Marsot and Michelle Bertelsman at second doubles.

The Vikings earned a pair of wins in singles play, but it was not enough as Quincy earned the 7-2 victory.  Bernardi defeated Henry (6-1, 6-3) at number two singles and Sapio earned her second straight singles win with a (6-0, 7-6 (5)) decision over Marsot at the fourth spot.  Richardson fell (6-2, 1-6, (10-6)) to Novak at number one singles and Doemland dropped a (6-3, 4-6, (10-7)) decision at the number three position.
