2008-2009 Season - Vikings take third in 12 team Mount Mercy Women’s Golf Invitational; Rachel Gahn shoots 83 to place third individually
Cedar Rapids, Iowa – Senior Rachel Gahn (Edina HS, Edina, Minnesota) fired an 83 to finish in a tie for third in the Mount Mercy Fall Invitational on Friday, August 29 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa at Hunter’s Ridge Golf Course. Thanks in part to Gahn’s fine outing, the Vikings of head coach Ron Standley placed third in the 12 team meet with a score of 361.
Gahn shot 42 on the front nine and 41 on the back nine of the par 72 18 hole layout. Kelly Jansen of St. Ambrose won the event with a score of 76 while Katie Vaux of Simpson was second with an 81. Gahn, the Augustana MVP each of the last two seasons, finished in a tie for third with MacKenzie Hein of St. Ambrose. Victoria Brown of St. Ambrose was fifth with an 84. Caitlin Childers of St. Ambrose (85), Dena Hugen of William Penn (87), Brittany Boon of Ashford 987) Jackie Lerdal of Coe (89) and Simpson’s Megan Smith (89) rounded out the individual top 10.
St. Ambrose easily won the team title with a score of 334 while Simpson was second with 357 and Augustana took third at 361. Ashford (370) and Viterbo (375) completed the top five teams. Mount Mercy took sixth with 387 and Coe was a close seventh with 389. Iowa Wesleyan finished in the eighth position at 398 with Cornell taking ninth at 406. Clarke was 10th with a score of 416. Grand View (419) and William Penn (452) rounded out the field.
Freshman Brittany Carr (Lincoln Way East HS, Frankfort, Ill.) was the next Augustana finisher after Gahn with a 92, good for 16th place. Senior captain Heather Arizpe (Conant HS, Schaumburg, Ill.) and junior Katherine Mascheri (Hersey HS, Mount Prospect, Ill.) tied for 21st with scores of 93. Sophomore Jessica Berens (Schaumburg HS, Schaumburg, Ill.) was 26th at 95 and freshman Alexa Fontana (Freeport Aquin HS, Freeport, Ill.) took 45th with a 102.
Augustana’s next outing will be Monday, September 1 when the Vikings host a quadrangular at Emeis Golf Course in Davenport, Iowa.
