2008-2009 Season - Women's golf team earns all-scholar award from National Golf Coaches Association for 2007-08
Coral Springs, Florida – The Augustana women’s golf team was awarded the distinction of 2007-08 All-Scholar Team from the National Golf Coaches Association, it was announced today. The NGCA recognized the top 25 teams in the nation for all divisions and Ron Standley’s Vikings held down the 23rd spot with a cumulative grade point average of 3.522. Of the top 25 teams, only five were NCAA Division III institutions. The University of South Alabama led the way with a GPA of 3.734.
In addition to the team award, a trio of Augustana golfers have been selected to the 2007-08 All-American Scholar team on an individual basis. A total of just 56 NCAA Division III players were selected. In order to be selected the student-athlete must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.50 and have played in at least 50% of the college’s regularly scheduled competitive rounds during the year.
Rachel Gahn (Edina HS, Edina, Minn.), Heather Arizpe (Conant HS, Schaumburg, Ill.) and Jessica Berens (Schaumburg HS, Schaumburg, Ill.) were the Vikings who were honored. Gahn and Arizpe will be seniors during the 2008-09 season while Berens will be a sophomore.
Gahn was the team’s Most Valuable Performer for the second consecutive season. She led the Vikings with an average round of 82.4 strokes and her low round of 75 at the Augustana Fall Classic was a team low for the year. She shot under 80 on three other occasions, including rounds of 77 and 79 at the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin championship, which earned her a third place finish. Gahn had a trio of individual wins on the season, shooting a 76 at the Augustana Triangular and a two round total of 165 at the Hickory Point Open in addition to her Augustana Fall Classic victory.
She sports a 3.92 grade point average with a major in chemistry. She was a member of the ESPN – The Magazine academic all-district second team.
Arizpe was the team’s Most Improved Player in 2007-08 after finishing third on the squad with an 88.1 stroke average. She had a low round of 81 at the CCIW championship, where her two day total of 169 garnered her 14th place. She also served as team captain. She had a 3.66 grade point average and is majoring in Spanish and education.
Berens was the Most Valuable Freshman last year. She averaged 96.2 strokes per round with a low of 86 at the CCIW championship, where she placed 21st with a two round score of 176. She has a 3.50 grade point average in general studies.
Gahn and Arizpe were named to the NGCA All-American Scholar team for the third consecutive year while Berens makes it for the first time.
