2009 Season - 2001 Softball Review

Hayler Hallstrom named MVP for Vikings Softball Team; Cassandra Hallstrom earns All-American Honors

Kris Kistler honestly did not know what to expect heading into the 2001 softball season. Her team was coming off a school record 30-15 campaign in her first season as the head coach in 2000 but that squad was loaded with seniors. The 2001 team did not have a single senior on the roster and several newcomers were going to be forced into key positions.

With that in mind, the Vikings had an outstanding season, finishing the year with a 23-20-1 overall record and a 7-7 mark in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin. Augustana placed third in the CCIW tournament, scoring a 3-1 upset over league champion North Central in the first round. Following that big victory, the Vikings fell to Illinois Wesleyan 5-2 and North Central 4-2 and were eliminated from the tournament.

Sophomore pitcher/outfielder Hayley Hallstrom (Moline HS, Moline, IL) was selected as the Most Valuable Player in a vote of her teammates. She posted a 13-12 overall record with a 2.12 earned run average in 169 2/3 innings of work. Hallstrom appeared in 27 games as a pitcher, starting 25 and she struck out 156 batters. She appeared in all 44 games that the Vikings played and she batted .317 with 45 hits in 142 at-bats with 22 runs scored. She had nine doubles, one triple, one home run and 23 runs-batted-in. She walked 14 times and had seven stolen bases.

During her career, which so far has spanned just two years, Hallstrom has a record of 30-18 and she is third on the school's career victory list. Her 305 strikeouts are a new school record, shattering the old mark of 238 compiled by Crystal Putman from 1979-82. She has worked a total of 317 1/3 innings and that is fourth on the all-time list. Her career earned run average is 2.34, which is fourth best in Augustana history.

The best offensive player was Cassandra Hallstrom (Moline HS, Moline, IL) and with good reason. Despite suffering from a serious knee injury following the spring trip to Florida, Hallstrom was forced to move from shortstop to designated hitter. She started all 25 games that she appeared in and she batted a team leading .463 with 37 hits in 80 at-bats while scoring 14 runs and collecting 24 runs batted in. She had five doubles, one triple and five home runs while walking four times and had an on base percentage of .482. Her five home runs is a new Augustana school record, breaking the old mark held jointly by Sandy Goff (1996) and Aubrey Schissel (2000). She is tied for eighth on the single season RBI list with 24.

Junior Christine Okon (Glenbard East HS, Lombard, IL) was picked as the Best Defensive Player. Okon patrolled centerfield for the Vikings and had an outstanding year. She had 64 putouts and five assists while being charged with just one error. She was second on the team this year in batting with a .364 average as she collected 51 hits in 140 at-bats with 36 runs scored and 29 stolen bases. Her 51 hits places her fourth on the single season school record list and her 36 runs scored is tied for third. The 29 stolen bases is second, trailing only Okon's own record of 31 established in 2000. She is on the verge of owning a very big piece of the career school record board. She is already the school record holder in stolen bases with 72 and she is just four at-bats short of becoming the career leader. She has 376 and Kathy Radloff owns the school record with 380 from 1979-82. Okon is second in hits with 135 and seventh in runs scored with 81.

The Most Improved Player was Aubrey Schissel (Rock Island Alleman HS, Rock Island, IL) and the Player's Choice Award went to Patrice Schoolman (Herscher HS, Kankakee, IL). Schissel was 3-2 as a pitcher with a 4.13 earned run average and she batted .253 with 24 hits in 95 at-bats. She had four doubles, one triple and four home runs. Schoolman played in 22 games, 17 as a starter at second base and she had 26 put outs, 16 assists and only two errors.

Cassandra Hallstrom became the first Viking to earn All-American honors since Tammy Dollenbacher and Leslie Wallin in 1983 when she was named second team on the Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association NCAA Division III squad as a designated hitter. Prior to being named to the All-American team, she was selected first team All-Great Lakes Region. Hayley Hallstrom and Okon were second team all-region selections. Hallstrom and Okon were named to the all-conference team in the CCIW as well and it was the second year in a row that both players earned that honor.

Kistler completed her second season as the head coach at Augustana and she sports a record of 53-35-1 overall for a winning percentage of .601.

The 23 victory total is tied for the fourth highest single season victory in school history.
