2009 Season - Emily Willems joins Augustana staff as assistant softball coach
Emily Willems has been named assistant softball coach and administrative assistant in the athletic department for the 2008-09 school year. Willems will replace Leann Barber, who held the position for three years and has decided to move into private business.
Willems, a 2008 Monmouth College graduate, has been an active and successful member of the Quad Cities softball community for most of her life. She is a 2004 graduate of Rockridge High School in Taylor Ridge, Illinois and then took her talents to Monmouth.
She was a four year starter and letterwinner for the Scots at shortstop. She earned all-conference honors in the Midwest Conference all four years and she was the team captain for three of those seasons. Willems hold the Monmouth school record for grand slams in a single season and she ranks in the top ten for virtually every offensive category. Twice in the 2008 season she was named “Player of the Week” by the Midwest Conference.
She has been a volunteer ASA softball coach and she was the sponsorship chairperson of “Up ‘Till Dawn”, a fundraiser for the St. Jude’s Foundation.
She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in business administration from Monmouth.
Willems will join an Augustana program that has enjoyed great success under the direction of veteran head coach Kris Kistler. The Vikings have won the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin tournament championship three times (2004, 2006, 2007) in the last five years, earning NCAA Division III national tournament spots each time. They have been second in the CCIW tournament the other two times (2005, 2008). This past year Augustana was 26-18 overall. Kistler has compiled a record of 264-127 (.675) in nine years at the Viking helm.
