Final Exam: 5/21 3:00-5:00 Multi-section

Exams: The two exams will be either a combination of multiple choice and essay or just essay. Each is worth 110 points.

Presentation reactions: For the convocation and the film you will need to write a reaction paper and turn it in the next class period. It should include at a minimum evidence that:

a.       you attended;

b.      you were awake and paying attention; and

c.       you thought about the content and related it in some way to the course.

Each reaction is worth 10 points.

Interview data: You will be asked in weeks 2 and 3 to present the results of two sets of interviews (assuming they are available—if not you will need to notify me in writing by 3/12). The first interview will be with your parent(s) and the second with your grandparent(s). The purpose of the interviews is to provide descriptions of what dating/courting was like when your parents/grandparents were young. Although the interview will be informal, you should be able in your paper to respond to the following:

a.       what did “dating” mean?;

b.      what were the implied/specified rules for dating?;

c.       what were the expected gender roles in dating?; and

d.      what were the “sexual” expectations in dating? (please use good judgment in discussing the issues of sexuality)

Quantitative data: As part of the interview assignments you are to examine and report some quantitative data from some acceptable database. Such a database could be the:

a.       census http://www.census.gov/

b.      the Divorce and Marriage database http://www.divorvemarriagerecords.com/

c.       Department of Labor Statistics http://www.bls.gov/nls/nlsy97.htm

The information retrieved from the database should be used in relationship to one or more arguments made in the paper(s). For example, if your interview data indicates that young people began dating earlier over time, you might want to support that conclusion with additional; quantitative data. You will need to use this data to support at least two separate arguments.

Miscellaneous papers: During the term I will assign a number of additional short (2-3 page) papers as reactions to readings/discussions/films. The total of these papers will be 50 points toward your grade, evenly divided among the assignments (i.e., if 5 papers are assigned each will count 10 points, if 6 were assigned each will count 8.3).

Research paper: Each student will complete a research paper that is due 5/2 at class time. The paper needs to be about some aspect of dating/courting/relationships that is about or related to a topic in the course. I need to approve your topic which is to be turned in on 3/19 along with at least 2 acceptable resources. The final paper will require 4 acceptable sources.

Class presentation: During the last week and a half each student will do a presentation to the class based on their research paper. The presentation may be of the form chosen by the student, but most will include PowerPoint. The presentation should be 10 minutes long with an additional 5 minutes for questions. I will stop you after 11 minutes and anything less than 9 or more than 10 will be penalized. In order to arrange for presentations you need to email your PowerPoint to me no later than 4:00 PM 5/3.
