FOURTH GENERATION

12. Peder Hansen (38)(39) was born on 25 Mar 1856 in Uldum, Denmark.(8) Uldum is about twenty miles north of Vejle. He died on 15 Nov 1938 in Kenmare, ND.(39) He was buried in Kenmare, North Dakota.(8) Buried in Trinity Cemetery. Peder and Marie were staunch members of "de staerke Jyder," an extremely pietistic movement.

"Peder and Marie Hansen were sincere God-fearing people, their lives revolving around their church and family. Two sons became pastors. The whole family had to sacrifice so the 2 sons could go to college and seminary. Peder & Marie always spoke in Danish; however, we could speak in English to them, & they understood." [Vita, handwritten note] He was married to Marie Mortensen on 25 Jul 1885. Marriage date inferred from a 50th wedding anniversary celebration booklet, "Til Erindring om Festen" dated 25 July, 1935, Kenmare, North Dakota.

13. Marie Mortensen (40)(8) was born on 28 Apr 1866 in Graejsdal, Vejle, Denmark.(41) She immigrated in 1890 to to Coulter, Iowa. She died on 6 Feb 1966 in Kenmare, North Dakota.(39) [Luceo's recollections] Marie was born to a family which already had many children. At the age of eight or so, her parents gave her away to a family which did not have children. Marie was given a lot of hard work to earn her keep. Peder Hansen rescued her from her plight by marrying her. Her descendants are generally reluctant to talk about this period of her life.

[Vita, handwritten note] Our grandmother, Marie, lived with us when my dad was pastor in Council Bluffs, Ia.

Much of Marie's life was spent in Kenmare, North Dakota. A family reunion was held there at Trinity Lutheran Church, Silas Larsen, Pastor, in April, 1956. An article appeared in The Ansgar Lutheran, May 28, 1956.

[from Rhoda, handwritten note] My paternal grandmother Marie (nee Mortensen) was married at a young age-- maybe 15 or 16 in Denmark.
We always caller her Bedstemor. Her husband Peter (or Peder) our Bedstefar was 10 years her senior. He came to America first to establish a home for his family. She came later and went to Coulter, Iowa, through Ellis Island with three very young children. Fred, my Dad was 2 years old, the middle. They ultimately had 8 sons and 2 daughters and lived most of their lives in North Dakota. They also raised 2 more girls for whom they were sponsors at baptism. ...
Bedstemor and Bedstefar's 40th and 50th anniversaries were celebrated in a big way--always with church services, lots of food and lots of fun. Bedstefar was very fun loving and she serious and hardworking. ... Children were:

[vita at ordination, translated by Vita Jensen]
I, Niels, B. Hansen, son of Peder Hansen and Marie Hansen nee Mortensen, was born December 27, 1894 near Coulter, Iowa, and baptized January 14, 1895 at the same place by Pastor Kirkegaard.
In the month of February, 1901, my parents moved to Bowbells, North Dakota. In 1902 they moved to the vicinity of Trinity Church, near Kenmare, N. Dakota. Here I lived my childhood years under Christian influence both from my home and from the congregation.
I was confirmed April 3 by Pastor J. J. Kildsig. In the winter of 1911 I attended Brorson High School which I also attended the following 2 winters. Amon many good influences I must here mention the spiritual blessing that I experienced. The influence of Jens Dixen and Pastor Kildsig made a deep impression on me. In the summer of 1912 I worked in Zion Church, Norma, North Dakota. Here I came in touch with a large revival in the Nazarene Church. Under the influence of that revival I found my Savior, whom I had hitherto served, but not in a personal relationship. I had not lived in gross sins, but it became clear to me that now I should take a definite stand for Christ, or otherwise sin would draw me away from Him. Now that I had taken a definite stand for Christ, my soul was filled with joy and "with the peace that is beyond understanding."
From that time on I often wished that I could proclaim God's word to others. That wish never left me but grew on me. I traveled to Dana College, Blair, Nebraska in the fall of 1914 and began to prepare myself. I never felt a direct call from God to be His worker, but I do not minimized that fact that God has led me through the years and at last God has brought me to the conviction that it is His will that I should serve Him as pastor and sheperd of souls.
In 1919 I graduated from the academy and preseminary course at Dana College. The following two years I attended the State University of Lincoln, Ne. where I graduated in 1921. The following September, 1921, I enrolled at Copenhagen University where I studied theology for two semesters. The next year I entered Trinity Seminary, Blair, Ne., where I hope to graduate in the spring of 1924.
Now that I have accepted a call from Immanuel Church, Hampton, Ne., I hereby submit my request for ordination to the holy office of preaching and teaching ministry in the United Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
Respectfully,
Niels B. Hansen
