FOURTH GENERATION
14. Mads Peter Hansen
(10)(48)
(49)
(50)(51)
(52) was born on 2 Sep 1855 in Odemark, Marstal, Æ, Denmark.
(51)(8)
(53) The naturalization papers have his
birthplace as Rave, Denmark. He immigrated in Apr 1879 to Fremont, Nebraska.
(54)(55)
(56) Mads arrived in New York, New York
about April 1, 1879 on the steamship "Hamburg(er) Line." He immigrated
directly to Fremont, Nebraska. He lived there for three years and then moved
to Colfax County. He was naturalized on 20 Aug 1906 in Washington County, Nebraska.
(57) Citizenship was granted by the District
Court of the Fourth Judicial District of Nebraska. Witnesses for Mads were Hans
Meneke and Geo. H. Faber. His primary declaration of intention to become a citizen
was made in the District Court of Colfax County on February 19, 1901. He died
on 9 Jul 1936 in Blair, Nebraska.(11)
(58)(59)
Mads passed away after suffering from a paralytic stroke three years
earlier.
Gravestone is inscribed "For by grace are ye saved through faith. Eph 2:8."
[following from Dansk Almanac] Mads died after a long and often painful illness
on Thursday evening July 9, 1936 in his home on their farm ... For about 3 1/2
years he suffered from a paralysis and had been ill and helpless since, especially
so in the last half year. The funeral took place at the Blair church and was
conducted by Synodical President Dr. N. C. Carlsen. Paster Fred C. M. Hansen,
Milwaukee, son-in-law, gave a little talk, and his daughter (quite possibly this
could be Vita) sang a solo. He was buried on 12 Jul 1936 in Blair, Nebraska.
(60)(11)
Mads is buried in Blair Cemetery lot 31. handwritten note from daughter Lydia
....
He did travel around and sell Christian literature that I can remember and I
think too you could call him a lay minister as he was visiting the sick whenever
and when someone died he was there for the family. I can remember we couldn't
quite understand why he had to go so much and alone but mom did a good job of
looking after us. I always remembered him as an old man as he was 57 years old
when I was born. I know he came from Areo Denmark when he was 17. He was deacon
of the church and always read the opening and closing prayer for church services
as long as it was Danish.
Much of the information for descendants of Mads Peter Hansen comes from a little
pamphlet produced by Vita Marie Hansen Jensen in 1968.
[handwritten note from Vita] My grandfather, Mads P. Hansen was a stern yet kindly
man. In addition to farming he also went on the road to sell bibles and Christian
books. He was a Sunday School superintendent, and there was no mistaking that
he was an outstanding Christian. He provided well for his large family and was
their ruler.
Mads homesteaded at Schuyler, Nebraska, before moving to Blair. He lived on his
farm from 1891 to his death. He bought the Christoffer Paulsen farm (160 acres)
in September, 1904.
Mads P. Hansen served as UELC lay preacher by official authorization of the church
in Blair, Nebraska, from 1912 through 1918.
M. P. Hansen had an approximately 120 acre farm in the shape of a rectangle three
times as tall as it was wide about a mile and a half west north west of Blair.
[following from Dansk Almanac] Mads ... was born on the island of Aero in Denmark
September 2, 1855. There he was baptized and confirmed and lived his youthful
years. As a 23 year old youth he came to Fremont, Nebraska in America in April
1879. Three years later he went to Colfax County, Nebraska where he did farm
work and in 1883 he was married to Marianne Sinamark. ... In 1892 the family
moved to Blair and settled on the ... farm. ... Mads experienced his conversion
here in Nebraska, at which time by God's Grace he came to true faith and confession.
His membership in the Blair congregation stretched over 44 years. He was faithful
and generous in the work of the church, in which he held leadership positions.
For several years Mads Hanswen was a district missionary in the Nebraska area.
His work consisted ... in the selling of books, visitation and conversation.
He had considerable talent for this work. It was great joy for him to have a
part in this kind of mission work with his fellowmen in Blair and surrounding
area. ... He was married to Marianna Sinamark on 8 Oct 1883 in Colfax County,
Nebraska.(61) At the top of the Marriage
Record the groom is Mads Peder Hansen and the bride is Mary Anna Sinamark. In
the Marriage License the names are as above, but then a listing gives the groom
as Mads Peter Hansen and the bride as Mary Ann Sinamark. The certificate of marriage
uses the spelling Peder and Mary Ann.
At the time of the marriage license dated October 8, 1883, the groom was 28,
residing in Colfax County and the bride was 18 residing in Dodge County. The
license was signed by E. T. Hodsdon (sp?), County Judge, in Schuyler.
The certificate of marriage shows that the couple were united in marriage October
8, 1883 in the residence of the groom by A. M. Andersen, Pastor, with witnesses
Claus Andersen and Jens Peter Nielsen. (Jens is the great grandfather of Charlotte
Nielsen Young.) Married in Mads Peter's home. 15.
Marianna Sinamark was born on 24 Jun 1865 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
(62)(63)
(8) A transcription of a marriage certificate
(which I have not seen) gives the birth as June 4, 1865. Vita's pamphlet lists
the birthdate as June 4, 1864. The age at death on the gravestone indicates a
birthdate of June 23, 1865. The Fred Hansen Bible has a birthdate of June 24,
1865 (or 64). She died on 20 Nov 1897 in Blair, Nebraska.
(11) Name on gravestone is Mary A. Age at death is given as 32 years,
4 months, 27 days (which implies a birthdate of 23 June 1865). She is buried
in Blair Cemetery plot 31. variant spellings of name: Mary Anna (Sorensen),
